The Summerville Parks and Recreation Department has officially started registration for spring sports. This season introduces a Spring Volleyball program for youth, running from mid-March to mid-May 2025, focusing on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The program is for age groups 9/10, 11/12, and 13/14, featuring eight regular games and playoffs. Registration is open from January 1 to February 9, 2025, for $10, with late registration from February 10 to 16 for $20. The City of LaFayette Parks and Recreation is excited to announce the “Catch the Leprechaun 5K,” taking place on March 15, 2025. This event aims to unite the community and welcomes everyone, featuring a special 5K Training Club to help participants prepare for the race.
The Trion Recreation Department will start registration for spring sports tomorrow, Monday, January 6, 2025. This is a great chance for young athletes to be active, learn skills, and enjoy competition. Sports offered include Co-Ed T-ball for ages 3 and 4, Co-Ed Coach Pitch for ages 5 and 6, and baseball and softball for ages 7 to 12. Registration fees are $10 for city residents and $25 for non-city residents. Parents must bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate. The Chattooga Young Farmers will host their annual awards banquet coming next week, on Saturday, January 11th. The event will be held at the Chattooga County Ag Center, located just off Highway 100 on Middle School Road in Summerville. Menlo Lions Club will be making their famous Brunswick Stew on the 10th of January. Pick-up will be at Menlo Lunchroom Saturday morning between 7 and 10 AM. The stew sales helps the Menlo Lions Club give scholarships to Chattooga High School students who are going off to college next fall. The Menlo Lions Club also makes sure students who need glasses in our area receive them.
Chattooga County EMA / 911 will host a blood drive on Friday, January 3rd, from 11 AM to 3 PM at 170 Farrar Drive, Summerville. Organized by Blood Assurance, this event coincides with National Blood Donor Month, highlighting the critical need for blood donations to support local hospitals and save lives. Participants in the blood drive will receive a limited edition “Save Lives” long sleeve shirt as a token of appreciation for their generosity, while supplies last. The event emphasizes that just one blood donation can save up to three lives—a powerful reminder of the impact each individual can have. To ensure a smooth donation process, Blood Assurance encourages donors to prepare adequately. They recommend eating a nutritious meal before the appointment, bringing a valid ID, avoiding energy drinks, and drinking extra water to stay hydrated. There’s Hope For The Hungry will be distributing food at the South Summerville Baptist Church on Wednesday December the 18th from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Food must be picked up in person.
A 13 week Griefshare Program will begin January 9th at the Pennville Church of Christ in the fellowship hall. The program will be held on Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm.
