Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call last week after a man on McWhorter Drive reported that someone was trying to break into his home.  Deputies spoke with the complainant who said he had heard a noise on his front porch.  When he went to investigate, he found a heavily intoxicated woman on his porch. The woman allegedly tried to gain entry into the home when the complainant opened the door. Deputies located the woman nearby.  She could not explain to deputies why she was on the complainant’s porch.  Rebecca Ellen Robinson was arrested and charged with public drunkenness and criminal trespass and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has updated a Flood Warning for the Chattooga River and has extended the Flood Warning to 9:34 on Monday morning.  Overnight, the river had reached a stage of 9.4 feet at the gauge located on Highway 27 at the Chattooga River Bridge near The Summerville News.  Minor flooding is expected.  Flood stage is 14 feet.  The river is expected to rise above flood stage early Sunday afternoon and fall below flood stage on Monday morning.  Meanwhile, a Flood Watch for the rest of the area has been extended to Sunday morning at 1 AM.  More rain, showers and thunderstorms are expected between now and Sunday morning.

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry is holding a second meeting on the adoption of  legislation.  As sole commissioner, he acts as both the legislative and executive branch of local government; meaning he alone proposes legislation and then can enact it.  However, the public meetings are required by Georgia law.

A twenty-four-year-old Summerville man is accused of preventing a woman from making an emergency phone call and allegedly choking the woman.  Joseph Andrew Middleton reportedly took the woman’s cell phone away from her and assaulted her during an argument.  The incident took place in front of a juvenile child.  Middleton was arrested earlier this month and charged with hindering a person making an emergency 911 call and aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act.  He is additionally charged with third-degree cruelty to children charges because of the minor being present.  Middleton was arrested by sheriff’s deputies shortly before 11 PM on January 16th.

It appears that local voters might not have much choice when they go to vote in the Presidential Preference Primary on March 12th.  Both President Biden and Republican front-runner former President Donald Trump appear to be the likely candidates of their respective parties.
