Shorter University has announced students named to the Dean’s List during the Fall semester of 2023. To achieve this honor, students must have been enrolled full-time and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average for the term. These students from Chattooga County made the list:
Summerville Police took a report about home health care workers being harassed at a home on Espy Street. The employee with Delta Home Care said that the girlfriend of the son of the client was repeatedly berating and threatening home health workers who were caring for the client. The employee has spoke with her boss about the constant harassment and was told to get a police report to document the incidents.
Politics in Menlo has been very lowkey for most of the past several decades, but recently the Menlo City Council and Mayor Allen Keen have been at odds over several issues. The latest issue involved employees driving trucks home. The mayor maintains that has been the policy for many years, but some council members say that it goes against the city’s charter. Also, a group of Menlo City Council members met with a local attorney recently and some say that meeting was illegal. Mayor Keen and the local newspaper have accused the council members of “secretly meeting” with the attorney.
Over two decades ago, voters in Chattooga County approved a board of elections. However, the legislation required to establish the board was never introduced in the Georgia General Assembly.
Chattooga County DFCS has a job opening for a Social Services Specialist (1-00017404). The website where people can apply is https://dhsjobs.dhs.ga.gov . This job does require a bachelor’s degree. A Flood Warning is in place for the Chattooga River in Chattooga County. According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, the warning is in place until Friday morning at 8:26 AM. Minor flooding is forecast for the river. The river is expected to rise above flood stage just after midnight tonight and crest at 14.1 feet, which would be considered minor flood stage. Earlier this morning the Chattooga River was just over 3 feet and by 3:45 PM, the river had risen to just over 7 feet. Those who have property or live along the Chattooga River should make plans now to avoid loss of property. Also, low-lying areas and flood-prone areas affected by the river could be impacted overnight tonight. For the rest of the county, a Flood Watch remains in place until Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has extended the Flood Watch for Chattooga County and all of North Georgia until Saturday at 7 PM. Rain continues to fall across the area and more rain is on the way. Excessive runoff may result in the flooding of rivers, creeks and streams, low-lying areas and flood-prone locations. Several waves of showers and thunderstorms will impact the area between now and Sunday. An additional 2-4 inches of rain is likely. Locally higher amounts of more than 5 inches are possible, especially in thunderstorms or where storms repeatedly move.

A thirty-nine-year-old Summerville man was arrested on a warrant for Walker County after a traffic stop last week in Chattooga County. According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy noticed a vehicle with a temporary drive-out tag making a left turn onto Butler Dairy Road off Highway 27 without a working taillight. After stopping the vehicle the deputy discovered that the driver had an active warrant. David Wayne Lassetter, Jr. was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
A local church is collecting blankets to donate to the local nursing home residents. The Ridgeway Baptist Ladies Group has donation buckets at several area businesses including Menlo Restaurant, The Great Awakening Coffee Company, DIRT, Chattooga County Tax Commissioner’s Office, Southern Living Farm & Garden and the Chattooga County Water Department. They are accepting new blankets between now and February 29th.
