State Senator Colton Moore and U.S. Representative Marjory Taylor Greene are calling on Governor Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fanni Willis after allegations surfaced that Willis has a “secret boyfriend” that works as a prosecutor. The attorney is identified as Nathan Wade.
A forty-seven-year-old Washington state man died in a skydiving accident in Northwest Georgia last Thursday and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the man’s death. According to reports, the victim landed in a field near Grady Road near the Polk County Airport. Nicolay Grushmin was the name of the victim according to Polk County authorities. In a statement released to the Polk County Standard Journal, a spokesperson from the FAA says that the FAA investigates the packing of the main and reserve parachutes, and the rules of flight for the pilot and aircraft when investigating skydiving accidents resulting in deaths. It does not determine a cause.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal and state holiday held on the third Monday of each January to celebrate the life of the slain civil rights activist. Today is also Dr. King’s actual birthday. He was born on this day in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929.
A Summerville teenager was arrested in Lyerly last week after stealing a beer from the Boderline Quick Stop on Highway 114 near the Cherokee County, Alabama line. According to a report at the sheriff’s office, the seventeen-year-old male entered the store and after speaking with the clerk, “rushed to the beer cooler, opened the door, and grabbed a 15-pack of Coors Banquets” before running out the front door. The clerk ran into the parking lot and got a picture of the boys truck and tag number. A BOLO was put out for Jordan Grady Roan after the deputy was able to positively identify the vehicle. Roan was stopped later that same night in Cedar Bluff, Alabama. A Cedar Bluff police officer made contact with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office and positively identified the stolen beer in Roan’s possession. A warrant was issued for Roan’s arrest and he was booked into the Chattooga County Jail last week.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Chattooga County as well as Floyd, Gordon and Whitfield Counties. Dade, Walker and Catoosa Counties are under a Winter Storm Warning. Cherokee and DeKalb Counties in Alabama are under a Winter Weather Advisory. As of Sunday morning, the forecast is calling for freezing rain and snow beginning tonight and going through Tuesday morning. Temperatures are in the 20’s across the area this morning and we will see a high today in the mid 40’s. Overnight, the moisture will arrive and temperatures will be in the upper 20’s. Areas to the north and northwest of Chattooga County are expected to see more accumulations with forecasts of up to two inches of snow in Dade, Walker and Catoosa Counties. The higher elevations are likely to see more accumulation, and that could include the northwest corner of Chattooga County at Cloudland. For now, the forecast is saying snow accumulations of up to an inch for the valley areas in Chattooga County and a glaze of ice. For Walker County northward, there could be up to two inches of snow and a quarter-inch of ice. The forecast is still developing and WZQZ will bring you updates.

Animal Advocates says that if it is not possible for you to bring your pets indoors during the cold weather, there is FREE straw available at Pine Ridge Outdoor Supply in Lyerly and Southern Living Farm and Garden in Trion. The FREE wheat straw is available for Chattooga County families – one per family – one per vehicle picking up.
There will be an “Ecumenical Service” honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today at the Pond Spring A.M.E. Zion Church on Talifaferro Springs Road in Lyerly. The service will begin at 3 PM with the Rev. Jonathan Moore serving as speaker. Dinner will be served beginning at 2pm at the Maceo Wiggins Fellowship Hall. On Monday January 15th there will be a “Day of Service” beginning at 11am at the Fairway Recreation Center on Senior Drive in Summerville. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to come out an fellowship by the Rev. Jonathan Moore, Pastor and Rev. Robert Barrett, Pastor and MLK Jr. President.
Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp announced on Friday that Lauren Curry has officially been sworn in as Chief of Staff for the Governor’s Office, making history as the first female to assume the role permanently in the state.
The Georgia State Fire Marshal continues an investigation into a house fire on Kinzy Street in Trion that took the life of a Trion resident. The name of the man has not been publicly released, but reports indicate that he was a fifty-seven-year-old man who lived in the house with his mother. Both the mother and son reportedly had medical conditions. The woman woke to the house on fire in the predawn hours of Wednesday and called Chattooga 911. Firefighters were able to extricate both people and three dogs from the burning house. At the time, the man was unresponsive but later passed away. Two of the dogs died in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
