Due to the anticipation of severe weather, all campuses of Georgia Northwestern Technical College will be closed on Tuesday, January 16. All classes, activities and events are canceled.
The City of Summerville offices will be closed during regular business hours on Tuesday, January 16 and again Wednesday, January 17 until Noon due to inclement weather and freezing temperatures. Essential personnel will report to work as normal both days
Chattooga Early Headstart/ Headstart will be closed Tuesday January 16th.
Chattooga County Governmental offices will open on a 10am delay Tuesday and Wednesday. Transit will operate as needed and as roads allow.
Chattooga County Public Works has pre treated all county roads in the higher elevations that may see some freezing rain and ice. The Georgia Department of Transportation has advised they have pre treated all Georgia Highways in the county and surrounding areas as well.

We are waking up to temperatures in the mid-30’s over most of the area this morning and cloudy skies. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has extended the Winter Weather Advisory for Chattooga County to 10 AM on Tuesday morning. The Winter Weather Advisory for neighboring DeKalb County in Alabama has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. Neighboring Walker County in Georgia also is under a Winter Storm Warning. Today, we will see a mixture of freezing rain and rain throughout the day with temperatures remaining in the mid-30’s. Overnight tonight there is a 40% chance of rain, freezing rain and snow with an overnight low of 20 degrees. For Tuesday, partly sunny with a high of only 29 degrees. Tuesday night, bitterly cold with a low of 9 degrees and a high of 37 on Wednesday. Another weather system has the possibility for winter precipitation on Thursday night.
The Dollar General Store located at 10551 Commerce Street in Summerville remains closed after the roof collapsed in a portion of the store last week. WZQZ News spoke with employees of the store who said that the roof collapsed in the receiving room where the store receives its stock. The store was closed immediately and employees were notified not to report for work. WZQZ News has reached out to Dollar General Corporation, whose headquarters are in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, about the damage and plans for repairs at the retail store. As of Sunday, the online listing for the store was still saying the store was open – that information is incorrect.
The Chattooga County Republican Party’s plans to vet candidates to determine if they are true Republicans is meeting with resistance from local voters. At a meeting last week, the county’s GOP leadership brought in speakers from the Georgia Republican Assembly (GRA) to explain the vetting process.
A twenty-three-year-old LaFayette man was arrested by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence on January 5th. According to a report released late last week by the sheriff’s office, a deputy was operating radar at Stoleman Road and Highway 27 north of Trion when he clocked a car doing 75 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. The deputy initiated a traffic stop near Halls Valley Road and spoke with the driver, identified as Austin Lee Tiffin.
State Senator Colton Moore and U.S. Representative Marjory Taylor Greene are calling on Governor Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fanni Willis after allegations surfaced that Willis has a “secret boyfriend” that works as a prosecutor. The attorney is identified as Nathan Wade.
