Voters are responding to the local Republican Party’s plans for a qualifying committee to decide if candidates wishing to appear on the May GOP Primary ballot are “real Republicans”. On Monday of this week, the local GOP posted a notice at the Chattooga County Courthouse saying any candidate wishing to be on the ballot would be vetted by a five-person committee to decide if they “uphold the values” of the Republican Party.
On Wednesday of this week, Summerville Police responded to a call at 5:30 AM, and when they arrived they found a woman who had overdosed on drugs. Police say when they arrived they found the woman unresponsive and believed her to be incapacitated due to opioids. Police quickly administered two doses of Narcon to the victim and began chest compression until EMT’s arrived from Atrium Health Floyd Ambulance Service. Summerville Police Chief Harold Tucker told WZQZ News on Wednesday that, thanks to the officers quick response, the woman was alert and conscious by the time she was transported to a Rome hospital for treatment.
An Armuchee-area man was arrested on drug charges on North Floyd Park Road after he allegedly fled on foot from Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputies Tuesday.
North Georgia Community Action, Inc. provides services to low-income and elderly citizens. Every three years they are required to complete a Community Needs Assessment to identify “unmet needs” (food, shelter, employment, transportation, health care, addiction, etc.). The Needs Assessment is critical in obtaining funding to address unmet needs. S.A. Howell has been contracted to complete the Assessment and he has a very short survey to ask members of the community for their input. For those who need some extra help this holiday season, there will be free food boxes given away one week from tomorrow in Lyerly. The food boxes are a joint effort between Pentecostal Power Ministries and Drug Free Chattooga. The Feed The Hungry Food boxes will be available for pickup, starting at 2 PM, on Friday, December 15th at Pentecostal Powers Ministries. The church is located at 85 Lyerly Dam Road in Lyerly. The boxes are for pickup only – no deliveries – but are available for anyone in need of food.
The Chattooga Young Farmers will be hosting their annual Christmas party coming up this Saturday, December 9th at 7 PM at the Chattooga County Ag Building. Those planning to attend should RSVP to Lauren Jarrett by the end of the day today. Coming up next month, the Young Farmers will have Jason Hammonds from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as the guest speaker for their monthly meeting on January 4th. Then, on January 13th, the Young Farmers will be hosting their annual banquet at the Ag Building. Also, a pesticide class will be held on January 29, 2024 at 7 PM at the Gordon County Ag Center.
