A twenty-one-year-old man was arrested at a checkpoint in Lyerly the day after Thanksgiving, according to a report released this week by the Georgia State Patrol.  State Troopers and Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies were conducting the checkpoint at the intersection of Oak Hill Road and Smallen Road.  Shortly before 1 PM, a vehicle pulled up at the checkpoint and a deputy alerted state troopers that he believed the driver was impaired.  The driver, identified as Jason Wayne Malone, told the trooper that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day before going to work.  After a field sobriety test, Malone was arrested and charged with DUI and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Police arrested a Summerville teenager on Sunday after a shoplifting incident at a local convenience store.  Police say that seventeen-year-old Jordan Grady Roan came inside the Circle K on Commerce Street and stole a beer.  Video surveillance at the store show the teenager putting a 16-oz. Michelob Ultra down his pants and fleeing from the store, according to police.  When police approached Roan, he admitted to having drank the beer. Roan was charged with theft by shoplifting and underage consumption of alcohol.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is asking everyone to make the holidays merry by making the decision to never drive after drinking.

A Chattooga County woman was arrested in Floyd County over the weekend on burglary charges.  According to arrest records from the Floyd County Jail, thirty-nine-year-old Joanna Marie Doan of Trion was arrested on Sunday after allegedly breaking into a home on Huffaker Road.   Police say that Doan entered the residence by breaking in a window to gain access to the house.  Once inside, police say that the woman stole keys, a cell phone and a wallet with $325 in cash inside.  Doan then allegedly threatened to kill the victim.  Doan was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and terroristic threats and acts and was booked into the Floyd County Jail.

Thinking about running for office as a Republican in Chattooga County?  Be prepared to get approval from the local party before they will allow your name to be on the ballot.  Local Republicans posted a notice at the Chattooga County Courthouse on Monday saying that they have formed a “qualifying committee” and any candidates wishing to appear on the Republican primary ballot must get the approval from the five-person committee before they will be qualified to run.
