A twenty-six-year-old Summerville woman was arrested on Wednesday morning shortly after 4 AM and charged with criminal trespass. According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, earlier this week, Jodeci Elizabeth-Kayla Walker was accused of stealing her mother’s pocketbook and cell phone. Walker was then accused of coming back to her mother’s residence and brandishing a knife in a threatening manner. According to the report, Walker did return the cell phone, but not the pocketbook.
The budget tentatively adopted by the Chattooga County Board of Education requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Chattooga County Board of Education may finalize the tentative budget and set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase. The first of those meetings was held yesterday evening. Five members of the public spoke at last night’s meeting. Two more meetings will be held on November 16th – one at 8 AM and another at 5:30 PM, when the Board is expected to adopt the new millage rate. The public is invited to attend and comment on the millage rate at these meetings.

For the first time in four years, Georgia has been impacted by extreme drought conditions, negatively impacting the state’s agricultural industry. United States Department of Agriculture Secretary (USDA) Tom Vilsack issued a natural disaster declaration for Chattooga County and three other Georgia counties following a sustained period of drought. Along with Chattooga, impacted counties include Catoosa, Dade, and Walker which have all sustained eight or more weeks of severe, extreme, or exceptional drought conditions. This declaration allows USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend essential emergency credit to Georgia farmers affected by these weather events.
A Rome woman who was working as a nurse at the Floyd County Jail has been arrested after she reportedly showed up for her shift with a loaded handgun.
A Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to Walmart in Trion last week after a call from a man who said that he was afraid to go home. When the deputy arrived and spoke with the complainant, he said that his wife had been drinking all day and that he wanted law enforcement to be present when he went to his house. When the deputy and the complainant arrived, the woman refused to get off the couch and talk to the deputy. Eventually, she came outside and became belligerent with the deputy, yelling and cursing. The deputy asked the woman how much she had to drink and she replied “Two”. The deputy asked her what she meant by two and she said it was “none of your (expletive) business”. Cynthia Perez continued to argue with the deputy and he placed her under arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer.
WZQZ News spoke with Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader about a weekend shooting that took place on Jamestown Road in Menlo. The sheriff said that both men, who shot each other in the midst of an ongoing argument, are still in a Rome hospital recovering from their wounds.
