The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office said it is seeing an uptick in the number of alligator sightings in the Chattahoochee River.
A Chattooga County man is facing charges after police say he ran a stop sign and was involved in a wreck on Georgia 20 and East Drive on October 5th and fled the scene on foot after checking on the other passengers, leaving his passenger and vehicle, reports state. According to Floyd County Jail reports, Jarvis Dreion Caldwell, age 34, of Summerville, is charged with misdemeanor hit and run, driving with a suspended license and a stop sign violation. He is also charged with a felony probation violation. He remained in jail without bond as of Friday morning.

Summerville Police responded to a call at Jack’s Restaurant concerning a customer who had been making sexual innuendos and comments to a sixteen-year-old female employee. The manager of the restaurant told a responding officer that the man had also leaned in and “sniffed a woman’s hair” while he was standing in line. The manager asked that the man be trespassed and ordered not to come back in the restaurant. Police located seventy-one-year-old Stephen Anthony Pettyjohn inside the restaurant and ordered him to leave and not return or he would face arrest.
Tuesday, Summerville Police were called to a Alred Street address about a stolen wallet. The complainant told the responding officer that someone had stolen her wallet that contained cash, a credit card, a debit card and an EBT card. The complainant identified a possible suspect to police and said that she had recovered some of the cards that were in the wallet in the yard of the Alred Street residence where the suspect was last seen. The incident was turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.
The City of Menlo is looking to change their election cycle. Currently, the city has an annual election to elect the city’s mayor and city council. The cost of those annual elections is getting to be excessive, especially since the city must hold early voting and also has Saturday voting. The polls have to be manned by at least two people, according to Georgia law. The council met recently and discussed changing the annual elections. All of the council members and Mayor Allen Keen were in favor of reaching out to the city’s attorney to see what would need to be done to change the city’s bylaws. Menlo City Clerk Jill Neal told WZQZ News that the city is waiting for direction from the city attorney.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger applauded this week’s federal court ruling rejecting the U.S. Department of Justice’s attempt to enjoin key provisions of Georgia’s Election Integrity Act (SB 202) for the 2024 election. The Biden Administration had asked the Court to prevent enforcement of five provisions of SB 202, including the regulation of absentee ballot drop boxes, the prohibition against line warming at polling locations, the deadline for absentee ballot applications, out of precinct voting, and the ID requirement for absentee ballot applications.
The City of Summerville and the Friends of The Summerville Cemetery have announced a “fall clean-up” that will be held November 9th and / or November 11, 2023. The clean-up at the cemetery will take place from 9 AM – 2 PM.

Applicants should be highly motivated, have excellent communication skills, and have interest in learning more about the legislative process. Start and end dates are flexible. Georgia ties are preferred, but not required. This is a paid position and college credit can be earned.
A Trion man was sentenced to ten years in state prison for selling drugs. Repeat offender, fifty-one-year-old Dale Holbrook was arrested in May of this year on charges of distribution of methamphetamine and drug possession. A Chattooga County Superior Court Judge sentenced Holbrook to ten years in prison and ten years of probation. Holbrook was also ordered to pay $18,853.50 in fines. Holbrook spent time in state prison from 2007 -2010 on drug charges and was on probation at the time of his arrest.
