It’s almost that time of year again! Come join James H. “Sloppy Floyd” State Park for Trick Or Treating in the park campground on Saturday, October 28th. There will be a shuttle available from Day Use to the Campground from 6 PM until 7:30 PM. The park asks that unless you are staying in the campground, please do not drive your vehicle through the park while trick or treating is going on.
It’s rivalry night on WZQZ tonight as the Trion Bulldogs will travel to the Little Big Horn in Summerville to take on the Chattooga Indians for the 40th overall meeting between the two schools dating back to 1933. The two schools rekindled their rivalry last year for the first time since 1971 and the Bulldogs notched a home victory last year 42-0 over the Indians at Sam R. McCain stadium. Chattooga will look to avenge that loss tonight while the Trion Bulldogs will be searching for their first victory at the Little Big Horn since 1963. Tonight is the last guaranteed game in the rivalry. GHSA reclassifications next year could possibly move the two schools into separate classifications and if that were to happen, it would be up to the Trion and Chattooga school systems whether to continue the annual rivalry.
The Chattooga Indians come into tonight’s contest 1-6 overall and 0-3 in region play which currently has them tied for last place in the region with Dade County and Coosa. The Trion Bulldogs are 6-0 and 2-0 in region play and tied for first place in the region with Darlington and Armuchee. Trion is also ranked 3rd in the state according to the AJC.

An accident at the end of last month on Highway 27 at Scott Hill Road claimed the life of Lori McWhorter and David Lopez. Thursday morning word came that another woman passed away as a result of injuries she received in that accident. McWhoter’s mother, Mrs. Rachel Delaine Crisp passed away. That accident in September involved a 2006 Jeep Wrangler driven by David Lopez of Rome and a Hyundai Sante Fe driven by Lori McWhorter. The Georgia State Patrol says that Lopez’ Jeep crossed the median and came into the northbound lanes where it struck the Hyundai driven by McWhorter. McWhorter was pronounced dead at the scene and Lopez was pronounced dead at a Rome hospital. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Crisp are pending by the Coffman Funeral Home.

The Rome International Film Festival (RIFF) and Berry College will screen Georgia-made documentary, “The Only Doctor,” at Georgia Highlands College’s Heritage Hall on October 12, 2023, at 6 pm. “The Only Doctor” focuses on Dr. Karen Kinsell and the issues she faces as the sole healthcare provider in a Southwest Georgia county for over 20 years and was partially filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is free, and light refreshments will be served.
Joseph Lydell Edgeworth, 46 of Summerville, was arrested in Rome this week after reports said he was captured on security footage stealing $4,700 worth of merchandise from Babazz Store on Redmond Circle.
The 8th Annual Fiddlin’ Fest Between the Rivers will be held this Saturday, October 14, 2023 from Noon to 6 p.m. This year’s Fiddlin’ Fest will host 130 vendors and food trucks. The street festival in Downtown Rome will feature live bluegrass music, a multitude of craft vendors, clothing vendors, Armuchee Ruritan Club Car show, pony rides, boat rides, food vendors and kids activities. The event is free thanks to the generous support of sponsors of Hampton Inn and Downtown Rome businesses and property owners (BID).
