Saturday was a picture-perfect fall day with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine and a great day for the annual SumNelly Arts and Crafts Festival. The event, that was first organized by Pam Echols decades ago, drew hundreds from all over the area. In fact, the turnout for SumNelly appeared to be one of the largest crowds in many years. On Saturday at SumNelly, Summerville Main Street announced the winners of the Downtown Scarecrow Contest.
After a glorious fall day on Saturday, we can expect another cool crisp day across Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia says that we will see highs in the low 60’s today, and tonight temperatures could dip down in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. The higher elevations of Chattooga County may see temperatures in the mid 30’s by Monday morning. There is a chance for light frost overnight tonight. If you have outdoor plants you may want to take precautions to protect them before nightfall. In the extended forecast, it looks like we might finally see a chance of significant rainfall by Friday or Saturday.
Former Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney and Judge Ralph VanPelt will be the featured speaker at today’s meeting of the Chattooga County Historical Society. The meeting will be held at 1 PM at the historic Summerville Depot. VanPelt is a native of Chattooga County and a graduate of Berry College and the University of Georgia School of Law. He will be speaking about his career and notable events that took place in Chattooga County during that time. Hunters in Georgia have the opportunity for an early “shot” at a deer during the upcoming week-long primitive weapons deer hunting season opening Sat., Oct. 14. Last year, nearly 10,000 deer were harvested by over 26,000 hunters, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).
The Summerville City Council will hold their regular monthly meeting for October coming up tomorrow evening at Summerville City Hall. The meeting will take place and 5 PM in the council room and there will be a question and answer session with the mayor and council that starts at 4:30 PM. The council will be opening right of way mowing bids and considering a request to install a new electric vehicle charging station in Summerville. The public is invited to attend.
Atrium Health Floyd is inviting the public to a celebration of the stand-alone emergency department that is nearing completion in Chattooga County.
A Chattooga County man was arrested in Floyd County last week after causing a disturbance in the emergency room of a hospital in Rome. According to jail records from Floyd County, forty-year-old Treva Misuni Wiggins of Summmerville was asked to leave the hospital after causing the disturbance. He was arrested after he showed up a short time later. Wiggins was charged with disorderly conduct and was booked into the Floyd County Jail.
