The extreme heat is making air conditioners in Northwest Georgia work overtime and the extra power required to keep homes cool is coming at a bad time for many lower to middle-income families.
The Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) Foundation has awarded the Judy Hodge Memorial Scholarship to Karli Johnson, a Business Technology student on the college’s Whitfield Murray Campus.
A fifty-year-old Rome man has been arrested in connection with an assault that occurred on Alabama Highway back on August 7.
A forty-two-year-old woman lost her life in a fatal vehicle accident on Saturday near the intersection of the Gore-Subligna Road and U.S. Highway 27 in Chattooga County. The preliminary report released by the Georgia State Patrol says a 2010 Hyundai Tucson driven by Jillian Durgin of Rome had entered Highway 27 from a gas station lot and traveled east into the path of a 2017 Freightliner CMV that was traveling south. The tractor-trailer struck the Hyundai in the left side and both vehicles continued off the roadway and into a ditch. The tractor-trailer overturned striking a 3rd parked tractor trailer that was in a private lot. Durgin sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene by Chattooga County Coroner Earle Rainwater. It’s the final day of the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. Gates open at 2 PM and the fair stays open until 9 PM this evening. Also, there will be gospel music on the Smith’s Ironworks Stage. Adam Crabb and his sister Terah Crabb-Penhollow will be the featured artists. As members of the Crabb Family, the two have performed with each other for many years. After the Crabb Family disbanded in 2006, Adam and Terah formed the Crabb Family Revival. Update from the Georgia State Patrol: “Troopers were dispatched to a crash in Chattooga County where a 2010 Hyundai Tucson driven by Jillian Durgin, 42 of Rome had entered GA 1 from a gas station lot and traveled east into the path of a 2017 Freightliner CMV that was traveling south. The CMV struck the Hyundai in the left side and both vehicles continued off the roadway and into a ditch. The CMV overturned striking a 3rd parked CMV that was in a private lot. Durgin sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene by Chattooga County Coroner Earle Rainwater. Next of kin has been notified.”

An accident on Saturday afternoon on Highway 27 at the intersection of Gore-Subligna Road took the life of one person. According to early reports, it was a two-vehicle accident. Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader confirmed a fatality in connection with the crash at 1:24 PM. The Georgia State Patrol will release more information after notification of next of kin.
The third day of the 2023 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair is happening today. Gates will open at 2 PM and the fair will remain open until 11 PM. Gate admission is $5 and ride armbands will be $30. Today, the 4H and FFA Jr. Beef Show will be taking place under the pavilion at the fairgrounds and the 4H and FFA Poultry Show and Auction will be held at 6:30 PM. Babes Bayou will be on the Smith Ironwork’s Stage starting at 7 PM and Boys in the Band will hit the stage at 9 PM. There will be a laser light show after dark. Come out and enjoy the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.
Qualifying ended on Friday for Chattooga County’s four municipalities – Trion, Summerville, Lyerly and Menlo. Lyerly had two incumbent town council members qualify with no opposition. There will be one contested city council seat on the ballot in Summerville. In Trion, there will be one contested town council seat and two contested races for the board of education.
