

A forty-one-year-old Oak Street, Summerville man was arrested on damage to property charges last week after he was accused of breaking windows out of a residence. A witness told police that they had observed the suspect busting out windows and yelling at a house that was being worked on at Oak Street. In a report released on Wednesday of this week, police say that Daniel Calhoun was seen causing the damage to the residence by a witness. Calhoun protested his innocence, but was arrested on criminal damage to property charges in the second degree in connection with the incident.

Hundreds of people turned out for a tax assessment town hall meeting last month and they, along with several hundred more Chattooga County tax payers have flooded the local tax assessors with tax appeals.

The Chattooga County Agricultural Fair is back for the second night this evening. Gates open at 5 PM and the fair will remain open until 11 PM. Tonight, the musical entertainment will be from the Kinchafoonee Cowboys.

Today is the opening day of the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. Gates will open at 5 PM this evening and tonight is student night, sponsored by the City of Summerville. All students will have free gate admission. Also, ride armbands are $5 off this evening. The 4H – FFA Jr. Market Goat Show will be taking place this evening at 5:30 PM under the pavilion. Every night of the fair there will be a laser light show after dark. Students in the Chattooga County School System will have early release today. Students will be let out of class at 1:30 PM and all children should be picked up no later than 2 PM. Chattooga County Firefighters will be organizing parking at the fair, and the cost to park is a donation to our local fire departments. Also, the Chattooga County CERT Team will be assisting with gate security. Don’t miss the opening day of the 2023 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.

A Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call from the Lyerly Dollar General Store about counterfeit money last week. According to a report released on Tuesday, the deputy was told by a store clerk that a woman came into the store and attempted to use five fake $20 bills to put money on her cash app. The store clerk told the woman that the bills were fake and that she could not give them back to her and that a report would be made to the sheriff’s office about the incident.

The deadline to file an appeal for property tax assessments was on Monday of this week and the Chattooga County Tax Assessor’s office has been flooded with taxpayers appeal forms. The overwhelming number of tax appeals could mean that tax bills will go out later than normal this year.
