Over 1,000 Chattooga County property owners have filed appeals after getting their property tax assessments in the mail several weeks ago. Just how all those tax appeals are going to be heard remains to be seen, but the tax process is likely to be slowed down. The county still has to get its tax digest approved by state officials and the county commissioner and board of education has to set millage rates before tax bills can be mailed.

The City of Summerville just saw a brand-new liquor store open in recent days and the Town of Lyerly has a liquor store, but if you travel past Summerville on Highway 27, you won’t find another liquor store until you cross the Tennessee state line into Hamilton County. That could be changing, as Walker County Commissioners are discussing licensing criteria for the county to have its first liquor store or stores. The Walker County Board of Commissioners held one hearing on the matter on July 27th and another hearing will be held on August 10th at 7 PM at the board room at the Walker County Courthouse Annex. Commissioners are deciding how many licenses they will allow and the minimum size for each licensed store, where those stores could be located and operating hours.

The next Mega Millions® drawing on Tuesday, August 8, will flirt with the game’s record jackpot of $1.537 billion, won in South Carolina on October 23, 2018. After no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night – the white balls 11, 30, 45, 52 and 56, plus the gold Mega Ball 20 – the estimated jackpot rolls to $1.55 billion ($757.2 million cash). With enthusiastic players across the country, many of whom are newcomers to the game, it is indeed likely that there will be a new record Mega Millions jackpot. However, we won’t know for sure until we get closer to Tuesday’s drawing; at this level, jackpots are hard to predict with complete accuracy.
