High School football fans won’t have to wait much longer to see local teams take the field. Georgia high school football teams had their first official mandatory practices Monday, and many have scrimmage games set for this evening. However, Trion and Chattooga won’t have scrimmage games until next Friday night. Trion will be host a scrimmage against Adairsville and Chattooga will be at Ridgeland. Once again this year, WZQZ will be broadcasting Friday night football, both on the radio and on Facebook. For the sixteenth season, Ben Groce and Jeremy Burke will be broadcasting Bulldogs Football and once again this year, Paul Cavin will have the play-by-play for Chattooga. The Georgia Department of Public Health says that Northwest Georgia is seeing an uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases. Dr. Gary Vocio with the Northwest Georgia Department of Public Health said that they are monitoring the increase in the number of cases, but aren’t saying that it is a “trend” at this time. There were 17 new COVID-19 cases reported in Chattooga County since the last reporting period two weeks ago, according to numbers released on Wednesday of this week.

A Roberts Street woman called Summerville Police this week to complain about pigs getting into her trash this week. A responding officer spoke with the complainant who said that the pigs travel from James Street and come into her yard. The woman said it wasn’t the first time this has happened, and told the officer where she thought the owner of the pigs lives. The officer said in a report that the James Street address is outside the Summerville city limits, but he went to try to locate the owner and was unable to find them – or the pigs. The Summerville Police Department contacted the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department about the pigs that are crossing jurisdictional lines and causing problems.

A Rome man is facing a felony obstruction charge after allegedly kicking a Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy and climbing on the roof to avoid being arrested.

On Thursday, the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) released a report updating progress on current construction projects in Northwest Georgia. There is currently one ongoing project in Chattooga County – the construction of a new bridge over Raccoon Creek on Highway 48 in Summerville. The job is a little over a year old and is being completed by C.W. Matthews Construction at a cost of $4.9 million. At the end of July, the bridge was reported to be 34% complete. The Georgia DOT says that the estimated completion date for the bridge is summer of 2024. You can see updates on other Georgia DOT construction projects in the region below:

Summerville Police were called to a Commerce Street business on Tuesday of this week concerning a tractor-trailer that had damaged the parking lot. The truck driver said that when he crossed the railroad tracks, headed south on Commerce Street, his air bag deployed and he had to make an emergency stop in the parking lot of Judy’s Herb Shop. The owner of the trucking company said that they would pay for the damage. The owner of the business and the trucking company asked that a report be on file with the Summerville Police Department.

The Chattooga County Agricultural Fair announced on Thursday that there will be no fair beauty pageant this year, but they hope to have it back in 2024. Fair Council member Zach Hughes said, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 2023 Chattooga County Fair beauty pageant has been cancelled. The pageant is a great addition to the fair and we are working diligently to ensure the pageant will return in 2024. We look forward to seeing everyone at the fair”.
