Renee Montgomery Receives “Friend Of The Community Award”

Summerville Main Street presented Renee Montgomery with the “Friend of the Community Award” on Wednesday.  Renee is an employee of the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office and was presented the award during Friendship Week, leading up to the Friendship Festival this weekend.

First Summerville Liquor Store Open For Business

Summerville has its first liquor store.  The Golden Package opened at 2 PM on Wednesday afternoon.  Up until the opening of this store, Chattooga County residents had to drive to Lyerly or to Rome or Chattanooga to purchase package liquor.  The store is located at 10707 Commerce Street, between the Computer Shop and Advanced Auto.  According to an online listing, the store will be open from 8 AM – 11 PM, Monday-Saturday and from 9 AM – 11 PM on Sundays.

Repairs Promised For Summerville Railroad Crossings

There are two railroad crossings in Summerville and drivers that frequent the area know that both of the crossings are in need of work.  There is good news for frustrated motorists, bids have been let to repair the Highway 27 railroad crossings in Summerville.  One crossing is located near the intersection of Highway 114 and Highway 27 and the other is near the intersection of Farrar Drive and Highway 27.  Summerville City Councilman Joe Money said on Tuesday of this week that the bids are due to be returned by the end of this week.  Repair work is expected to begin in late August or early September.

Back To School Tomorrow For Chattooga County Students

It’s back to school for students in the Chattooga County School System.  This evening, all of the schools in the county school district will be holding “Meet the Teacher” events.  For students headed back to Menlo School, things will be different.  There will be a brand-new school building, and the drop-off and pickup procedures will be different for a time as work continues on the parking area and entrance at the school.  Menlo Principal Paula Buice says, “On the first day of school, Friday, July 28, 2023, there will be changes to the morning drop-off procedure. Students can be dropped off on campus between 7:00-8:00 a.m. However, parents will be unable to walk their children to the classrooms during this time due to limited parking. We understand this may be disappointing, but we have an alternative solution. We have arranged a bus service for parents to walk their children to the classroom, meet their teacher, and see inside our beautiful new facility. One parent, accompanied by their child and/or children, may take the bus from the Menlo Ball Field to the school”.   You can see a schedule for the bus below:

Shooting Suspect Returned To Floyd County

A man arrested by Cartersville Police following a shooting incident on Friday in the area of the Sandra D. Hudson Villas on East 14th Street in Rome is now lodged in the Floyd County Jail.

Las Vegas Woman Arrested In Chattooga County

A Las Vegas, Nevada woman was arrested in Chattooga County after a traffic stop.  According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was following too closely and not wearing her seat belt.  When stopped, the woman told the deputy that she was traveling from the Atlanta airport to Mentone, Alabama to pick up her daughter.  The deputy found out that the woman had a suspended license and arrested her.  While in the back of the patrol car, the woman became irate and said she was being arrested because of her skin color.  According to the report, the woman began beating her head on the metal barrier between the front and back seat of the patrol car.  Twenty-six-year-old Timeshia Cobb was charged with following too closely, a seat belt violation and driving with suspended or revoked license and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
