Friendship Week In Summerville Continues With “Buy A Friend A Cup Of Coffee”

Friendship Week kicked off yesterday in Summerville and each day this week there are suggestions on how to show friendship in the “Friendship Capital of the World”.   Today’s suggestion is “buy a friend a cup of coffee or send a friend something special”.  The week is leading up to the Friendship Festival that will be held this weekend in downtown Summerville. Summerville Main Street will host a special invitation reception and Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the World Friendship Pocket Park on Friday evening, leading up to the Friendship Festival on Saturday. This special reception will honor those who made funding for this park possible by their donations, their purchase of engraved bricks, or their work on the project.  Each day this week, residents are encouraged to show friendship with acts of kindness.

 

Gaylesville Man Arrested After Entering Lyerly Home Without Permission

According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, a Gaylesville, Alabama man was arrested after he entered a Lyerly woman’s home at night, without permission.  According to the sheriff’s office, the complainant called 911 after the man entered her home through the front door while she was sleeping.  The woman’s dogs woke her up and she saw the man, who asked her if Cody Aycock was there.  The woman told the intruder that he was not.  The suspect left and was found a short time later by Cherokee County, Alabama sheriff’s deputies near the state line.  Chattooga deputies were able to apprehend the man and arrest him.  Fifty-two-year-old Nathan Thomas Deaton was charged with criminal trespass and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Friendship Week Starts Today

The City of Summerville is launching “Friendship Week” starting today.  The week will be full of suggestions with how to show friendship in the “Friendship Capital of the World” in advance of the Friendship Festival that is coming up this Saturday.  Susan Locklear with Summerville Main Street says, “The week leading up to the festival may be celebrated daily in a wide variety of ways. Summerville Main Street has put together a schedule of suggested activities that could make the Friendship Week a memorable and nice experience for all who choose to participate”.  Today’s activity is “Take a Walk with a Friend Day”.   The idea behind Friendship Week and the Friendship Festival is “to make the world a better place through friendship”. 

Gov. Kemp Announces New Director For State Charter School Commission

On Friday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia has selected Donovan Head to serve as Executive Director of the Commission, following approval of his hiring by the Board of Commissioners at a called meeting this morning. Head will begin serving as Executive Director effective August 1.

School Starts This Week In Chattooga County

It’s back to school this week for children in the Chattooga County School District.  The first day of school will be on Friday of this week, July 28th.  There will “Meet the Teacher” events for each school coming up on Thursday of this week.  Also, there is a school supply and backpack give away that will be hosted today by several Summerville churches.  The event will get underway this afternoon at 1 PM and last until the supplies are gone at Summerville First Baptist Church Family Life Center, located on Georgia Avenue in Summerville, across from Summerville City Hall.  The child must be present to receive school supplies, and must reside in Chattooga County.

County To Purchase Mower From Local Dealer

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry advertised for bids for a new zero-turn mower for the county’s public works.  The commissioner opened the bids on Friday morning.  According to the commissioner’s office, three bids were received.  Two from North Georgia Equipment Sales in Summerville and one from Rhinehart Equipment in Rome.  The county accepted a bid of $10,479.20 to purchase a Husqvarna Zero-Turn mower from North Georgia Equipment Sales.  The commissioner’s office says that the bid specs were given to interested bidders by Road Superintendent Yancey Robinson.
