Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced Friday that Farmers Insurance has rescinded tens of thousands of nonrenewal notices to Georgia consumers initially scheduled to go into effect in August.

The City of Summerville presented a “Friend of the Community Award” on Friday to Debbie Brown. The award was given in advance of Friendship Week and the Friendship Festival that is coming up next week.

The City of Summerville is selling yard sale spaces for the Highway 27 Yard Sale that is coming up next month. The cost is $5 per spot per day. Spaces will be assigned and forms are available at Summerville City Hall. The Highway 27 Yard Sale will take place August 3-5, 2023. All 18 Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) graduates, in the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program and the Practical Nursing (PN) program, who took a national nursing licensure exam this year have passed on their first attempt and achieved a 100 percent pass rate.

The Georgia Department of Labor released unemployment numbers on Thursday of this week. Initial unemployment claims in Chattooga County dropped by 80 during the month of June. In May of this year, there were 295 claims and last month their were 215. Georgia’s June unemployment rate remained steady at 3.2 percent, unchanged from a revised 3.2 percent in May. The unemployment rate is also four-tenths lower than the national average of 3.6 percent. “Georgia continues to become an economic powerhouse, attracting leading-edge businesses from around the globe,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “While low unemployment is crucial for a thriving economy, balancing job growth with a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of new and existing industries is crucial. The Georgia State Patrol is asking for your vote for the “Best Looking Cruiser” contest put on by the American Association of State Troopers. The AAST hosts the annual contest, asking for state agencies to submit entries relevant and unique to their state.
