High Heat Concerns

Temperatures are expected to hover in the upper 90’s for the next several days – all the way through the Fourth of July here in Northwest Georgia.  With the heat index forecast to be between 100-110, if you are planning activities outside, you should be sure to wear loose clothing, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks.  Also, don’t forget your pets.  Summerville City Councilman Joe Money posted this week that the Summerville Animal Ordinance covers proper care for pets during hot weather.  Pets should be provided with plenty of cool drinking water and have shade.  If you see an animal that is not being properly cared for, you can contact Chattooga County Animal Control.

Health Officials Concern About Malaria

In neighboring Florida, four people have contracted malaria in the last two months, leaving some asking if Georgians should be worried.  The Atlanta-based CDC reports this is the first time in 20 years the mosquito-borne illness has been confirmed in patients who haven’t traveled outside of the U.S. And while state health officials say the risk of malaria spreading across Georgia is unlikely, residents should take precautions against being bitten by mosquitos. Elmer Gray, an entomologist at UGA, tells the AJC that the best defense against the blood-sucking insects is to use products with a 10 to 30 percent concentration of DEET. The last locally contracted case of malaria in Georgia was back in 1999.
