Georgia Lottery Says Annual Report Will Be Complete By July 15

This past week, the Georgia Lottery celebrated its thirty-year anniversary.  Georgia Governor Zel Miller campaigned heavily for the lottery in 1993, even debating his own Methodist pastor on television, in support of a lottery to pay for education expenses in the Peach State.  The lottery sold it’s first ticket in June of 1993.  Since then, the Georgia Lottery has returned $26.5 billion to the state for education.

Paradise Garden Scavenger Hunt

Rev. Howard Finster filled his 4-acre art environment, Paradise Garden, with patriotic symbols and paintings of presidents. Find them all during Paradise Garden Independence Day Scavenger Hunt. For the scavenger hunt, guests will receive an image list with clues as to where each item is located in the Garden. Visitors able to find and check off each item will receive a prize! Summerville Police Respond To Call About A Fight

Summerville Police responded to a call about a fight on Bittings Avenue last Wednesday.  Someone at the residence called police after a fight broke out involving a family member’s boyfriend.  The woman and boyfriend were arguing when the boyfriend allegedly struck the woman in the face.  At that point, the woman’s brother stepped in and the boyfriend’s brother stepped in and a fight ensued.  Police say that there were no visible injuries to the woman, and the woman did not wish to press charges.  Police said that a report would be made about the incident.

Atrium Health Floyd Announces New Residents, Names Chief Residents

The Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program has named Dr. Rachael Candela and Dr. Hannah Williams the chief residents for the new academic year beginning July 1. Chief residents are selected and voted on by their peers and are approved by faculty and staff. During their one-year term, they will serve in leadership roles, mentoring underclassmen and acting as liaisons between residents and faculty.

Air Quality Will Improve This Week

A northerly to northwesterly flow that ushered in rounds of smoke during the workweek is easing up this weekend, leading to an improvement in air quality readings for the coming week in the northern part of Georgia after several days of hazy conditions caused by wildfires in Canada.

Georgia DPH Issues Warning About Heat

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) wants it to be a safe and healthy 4th of July for all Georgians and visitors to the state.

This weekend, Georgia will experience the warmest days of the year so far. Temperatures will reach the upper-90s, but with high humidity, it will feel more like 100-degrees plus. Smoke and haze will also trigger air quality alerts for Metro Atlanta and beyond. Be sure to stay well hydrated and out of the heat for prolonged periods of time.
