UGA Receives Agricultural Grant

A $1.5 million grant by the federal government will allow the University of Georgia to help advance agricultural initiatives. The USDA-funded grant aims to improve supply chain resiliency and strengthen the food supply chain across the state. The UGA Archway Partnership will administer the grant using its nationally recognized and award-winning model to support agriculture in Georgia. And it does so by connecting UGA experts with farmers and ag producers to determine the needs of Georgia’s agricultural community. The money is part of the USDA’s Food System Transformation framework, created to provide more options, increase access, and develop better markets for small and mid-size producers.

Still No Trial Date For Local PFAS Lawsuit

Recently a lawsuit between the City of Rome and manufacturers of what is commonly known as “forever chemicals” which include PFAS, was settled and the City of Rome  announced this week that they will be building a new water treatment facility with the money from that settlement.  A similar lawsuit against manufacturers by the City of Summerville and a local resident still is pending with no trial date set.  The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported yesterday that the precise amount of Rome’s settlement was not revealed due to confidentiality agreements.  Rome’s new water treatment plant is expected to cost $100 million and will come at no cost to taxpayers because of the lawsuit settlement.

GHC Unveils New Student Hub

Georgia Highlands College (GHC) recently unveiled its new student hub at the college’s Floyd Campus. Located at the McCorkle building and serving as the main entrance for the campus, the hub features a newly designed and covered brick exterior entranceway and provides a centralized location for students to access student services such as Admissions, the Business Office, Financial Aid and more. The space houses staff offices as well as seating areas for students to relax, study, or meet with other students on campus.

A thirty-two-year-old Rome woman is facing a felony obstruction charge after she allegedly bit a Georgia State Trooper’s hand during a traffic stop Tuesday.

U-Haul Rented In Summerville Reported Stolen

The Summerville Police Department received a report about a stolen U-Haul truck.  According to a police report released on yesterday (June 21, 2023), the U-Haul was rented by Lorraine Morris on April 28, 2023 and was to have been returned on May 1, 2023.  The vehicle has never been returned.  The complainant told police that he had spoken with the woman last week and she told him that the truck was at a motel in Rome.  The complainant went to find the vehicle, but said it wasn’t at the motel. The truck is a 2018 GMC with an Arizona tag of AH86212.  The case has been turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.
