A statewide Bible reading will be held next month that will see portions of the Bible read on the courthouse steps of all 159 counties in the state.  The readings will take place simultaneously and result in the whole Bible being read on the same day, throughout the state.

Chattooga’s Unemployment Claims Jumps In May

New number released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor (DOL)  show that the number of unemployment claims jumped dramatically in Chattooga County during the month of May.  According to the DOL, last month, there were 295 first-time unemployment claims in Chattooga County. That was a 574% spike over the number of claims filed in May of 2022, when just 4 people filed unemployment claims.  Georgia’s unemployment rate rose slightly last month to 3.2% after holding steady at 3.1% for the previous nine months, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday.

Grant Will Expand High Speed Internet Infrastructure Across NW Georgia

A $12.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce will expand high-speed internet infrastructure from Chattanooga to Atlanta and will impact eight counties in Georgia, including Chattooga County.

CPSC Issues New Drowning Report

The annual drowning and submersion report released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that fatal child drownings and nonfatal drowning injuries for children under age 15 remain high. CPSC urges families with young children and those in historically excluded communities to make water safety a priority, particularly as they spend more time in and around pools during the summer. Child drownings continue to be the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 years old.

Chattooga County is just one of the cities and counties in Northwest Georgia to benefit from a settlement of over $2 million from an opioid lawsuit in Northwest Georgia.  Local governments nationwide are collecting over $50 billion in settlements from lawsuits against some of the nation’s largest drug manufacturers.

Commissioner Seeking Bids To Paint E-911 Building & Courthouse Annex

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry is looking for bids to repaint two county buildings.  The bids are being sought for exterior painting of the Chattooga E-911 building on Farrar Drive in Summerville and the Chattooga County Courthouse Annex, located behind the Chattooga County Courthouse in downtown Summerville.  Bids are being accepted until 10 AM this Friday morning, June 23rd.  More information is available at the Chattooga County Commissioner’s Office, located at 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville.

Chattooga County Residents Featured In Christianity Today

One of the nation’s largest Christian publications is featuring an article on Chattooga County residents this month.   Christianity Today has a featured article entitled “Georgia Neighbors Find Freedom and Repair in Christ” and talks about the friendship of Stacie Marshall and Betty and Melvin Mosley and the history the two families shared.  The article delves into the story between the families that was featured in 2021 in a Berry College documentary called Her Name Was Hester.  Christianity Today is an evangelical magazine founded by Billy Graham in 1956 and has a circulation of over 260,000.  You can read the online article from Christianity Today HERE
