Here is the latest arrest report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office for Monday, June 5, 2023:

Last Thursday, Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry awarded four grants that were funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Two of the grants were awarded to local farms and two were awarded to local businesses.

A man with a long history of run-ins with the law was sentenced in Chattooga County Superior Court to spend four years in prison. Zachary Gage Suttles of a Halls Valley Road, Trion address pleaded guilty to several charges including fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Suttles has been arrested on multiple charges over the past several years in Chattooga County. He has also faced charges in neighboring counties and in Tennessee.

While some Methodists churches in Chattooga County have already left the United Methodist denomination, others are contemplating the move. This comes after a meeting of the North Georgia Conference of United Methodists last week.


Word came on Friday that a court date set for the lawsuit between the City of Rome and carpet manufacturers, along with manufacturers of “forever chemicals” has been officially cancelled. Bloomberg News reported unnamed sources that estimated the settlement will amount to more than $100 million.


Georgia Power announced that the third reactor at Plant Vogtle in Burke County has reached full capacity. During the next several months, the Georgia Public Service Commission will decide who will pay for the increase in costs for the project. Some lawmakers and consumer advocates are saying that Georgia Power shareholders, and not power customers, should pay for the project costs.

Almost 40% of Caucasian adults in Georgia experience at least one sunburn each year, and health officials say sunburn is a significant risk factor for the development of skin cancer. The rate of new melanoma diagnoses—responsible for 75% of all skin cancer deaths—is 13% higher in Georgia than the national average, and that statistic is even higher for white females than males.
