Two Georgia universities made it into the list of top 20 public universities in the United States. The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech were both on U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings of best public universities. Georgia is one of only four states to have more than one institution in the top 20. UGA has made it onto the list for seven consecutive years.

Two scammers picked the wrong person to try to hoodwink in a pine straw scam this past weekend in Putnam County, Georgia. Pine straw scams are frequent in Georgia. People pull up with pine straw and offer it at a low price and then attempt to scam the victim into paying a higher price – often using threats.


Each of the county’s four municipalities have regularly scheduled monthly meetings. For the month of June, the Menlo City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 6th at 6 PM at the Menlo City Hall. The City of Summerville will hold their regularly scheduled city council meeting on Monday, June 12th at Summerville City Hall. Summerville’s meetings are normally held at 5 PM with a question and answer session for the public at 4:30 PM. The Lyerly Town Council will meet at 7 PM on Tuesday, June 13th and the Trion Town Council meeting will be held on Thursday, June 22nd. The Trion Council normally has a work session at 6 PM with the regular council meeting following. All of these meetings are open to the public.

A domestic situation between two brothers landed one of them in jail this week. Summerville police spoke with the complainant at the Family Dollar store. The man was holding the back of his head and explained to the officer that his brother had thrown him to the floor after an argument over a television and a game system. Police found the brother, and he admitted to injuring the complainant. The complainant said he didn’t want to press charges, but police said because the complainant’s injuries were treated at the hospital, the brother was going to jail. The complainant was cited for throwing his brother’s gaming system in the yard and Isaiah Holder was taken to the Chattooga County Jail on battery charges.

There’s a buzz in the air in downtown LaFayette! This Saturday is the annual Honeybee Festival – LaFayette, GA. The daylong event, put on by the city of LaFayette, is free to the public and includes music, a Kid’s Zone, BBQ Competition, a baking contest, and cruise-in featuring an array of antique tractors, along with tons of vendors.
