UGA Researchers Making Progress In PFAS Study

PFAS are something that people in Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia have grown used to hearing about in the news.  PFAS were to blame for the water crisis in Summerville that shut down the city’s water treatment plant after the level of the chemicals were found to be higher than allowed in the city’s drinking water supply from Raccoon Creek.  Now, researchers from the University of Georgia are making progress into research that would provide advanced technologies to remove PFAS substance from water, wastewater and bio-solids.  The team was awarded nearly $1.6 million through a congressionally mandated grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to mitigate PFAS, which take a long time to break down and can build up in people, animals, water and soil over time. PFAS are commonly found in paper food packaging, stain-resistant and waterproof clothing and furniture, fire-repellents, and nonstick cookware.

Rome Man Killed In Memorial Day Weekend Accident

A Rome man was killed on Saturday after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.  Forty-three-year-old Jason Samuel Johnson was travelling on Kingston Highway just after 9 AM on Saturday morning when the accident happened. Coosa Valley News reported that Johnson may have had a medical emergency that contributed to the fatal accident. Over the Memorial Day weekend, troopers issued more than 10,200 citations, made more than 330 DUI arrests, and investigated nearly 400 crashes that resulted in over 240 injuries and 11 fatalities.

Two Arrested With “Large Amount” Of Meth

Earlier this month, agents with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force arrested two Summerville residents after they were found to be in possession of a “large amount of meth”, according to reports.
