A Rome man was killed on Saturday after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Forty-three-year-old Jason Samuel Johnson was travelling on Kingston Highway just after 9 AM on Saturday morning when the accident happened. Coosa Valley News reported that Johnson may have had a medical emergency that contributed to the fatal accident. Over the Memorial Day weekend, troopers issued more than 10,200 citations, made more than 330 DUI arrests, and investigated nearly 400 crashes that resulted in over 240 injuries and 11 fatalities.

Earlier this month, agents with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force arrested two Summerville residents after they were found to be in possession of a “large amount of meth”, according to reports.

The Trion Splash Pad is a popular place for kids to go during the summer months and enjoy, but this year, the splash pad isn’t going to be open the first full week the kids are out of school. Last year, the splash pad opened on May 28th, but the Trion Recreation Department says the opening date will be later this year. The Town of Trion is trying to get the surface of the pad clean, and according to a statement from the Trion Recreation Department last Friday, it is going to be another week or two before the splash pad opens. The Trion Rec did say “Thank you for hanging in there with us. We will be up and running soon”.

Today is Memorial Day, the day set aside to remember those who gave their lives for our country. From 1868 to 1970, Memorial Day was observed on May 30th. That changed in 1971 when Congress changed its observance to the last Monday in May. It is a Federal holiday which means the post office and banks will be closed. Also, all federal, state, county and governmental offices will be closed. Both the Town of Trion and the City of Summerville say that if you have an emergency today, you should call Chattooga 911.
