Trion Student Wins BBB Scholarship

A Trion High School senior has been awarded the 2023 Student of Integrity scholarship from the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Tennessee & Northwest Georgia (BBB).  BBB has awarded more than $190,000 in Students of Integrity scholarships during the past nineteen years to deserving high school seniors located throughout Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia. This year, ten students received $1,000 scholarships after being selected from nearly 100 entries. As part of their entry, students were asked to include an essay on the importance of ethics in business and our community.  Anna Edge of Trion High School was one of the recipients of this year’s Student of Integrity scholarships.

Lung Association Turns Georgia Turquoise

This week, the American Lung Association in Georgia is turning Atlanta turquoise to raise awareness of lung cancer and encourage residents to take action to end the disease.

Ducky Derby Returns This Weekend

Summerville Main Street’s Ducky Derby will be making a comeback on Saturday, May 13 for a fun race down Summerville Town Creek! The event will run from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. outside of the Summerville Depot and also highlight a Classic Car Cruise-In on East Washington Street hosted by The North Georgia Cruisers. Plenty of vendors will be on site with food and crafts and for the kids, the all-terrain mini train will be running, as well. The race is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Adopt a rubber duck for the race by purchasing an adoption ticket for a chance to win the Grand Prize of $500 for the first duck to cross the finish line. The second place duck will be awarded $250, followed by the third place duck bringing home $100.

Little Texas Valley Road Bridge Closure Wednesday

Floyd County Public Works will close the single lane bridge on Little Texas Valley Road to through traffic on Wednesday May 10, 2023 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. while work is being performed on the wooden floor of the bridge. Traffic will use Scenic Road as the detour until work is complete.

Summerville Man Arrested For DUI

A forty-six-year-old Summerville man was charged with DUI on Saturday evening after a traffic stop by Summerville Police.  Police say that Lavoid Smith McCutchins of a Hawkins Drive, Summerville address was stopped Sixth Avenue.  Police say that McCutchins said he had “one beer” before the traffic stop.  Police arrested him and charged him with DUI and booked him into the Chattooga County Jail shortly after 8 PM.

Georgia AG: Intuit To Pay Georgia Residents For TurboTax “Free” Tax Services

Attorney General Chris Carr announced late last week that 145,788 Georgians who were tricked into paying for free tax services by TurboTax’s owner Intuit will soon begin receiving checks from a $141 million multistate settlement announced in May 2022. In total, Georgia will receive $4,450,496.83 for affected consumers, with 4.4 million Americans expected to receive checks nationwide. Eligible consumers will be contacted by email about the settlement and will not need to file a claim. Checks will be mailed throughout May 2023, beginning this week.
