An ethics committee that included Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey has decided there is enough evidence to move forward with a full hearing concerning alleged ethics violations by Rome City Commissioner Mark Cochran.

The Chattooga Young Farmers are gearing up for the 2023 Pig Project. This youth agricultural project is supported and coordinated by the Chattooga County Young Farmer’s Association to give local youth a taste of raising and showing livestock. The ag students will receive their pigs in June. They then show their pigs at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair in August and have a pig auction in November. An informational meeting about this year’s pig project is coming up next week on Wednesday, May 10th at the Chattooga County Ag Center on Middle School Drive in Summerville. The meeting will get underway at 5 PM.

This week, Governor Brian P. Kemp signed Senate Bill 56 into law. Sponsored by Senator Chuck Hufstetler (R – Rome), this measure would require the State Revenue Commissioner to contract with the board of the Employees’ Retirement System of Georgia to offer certain county tax commissioners the option to participate in a state-administered deferred compensation plan.

The Summerville Police Department heard about a domestic incident on Sunday when a complainant came to the police station about a domestic altercation. The complainant, identified as Cynthia Martin, said that her niece had came from Cartersville and made accusations about the way Martin was caring for her parents. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation and Martin said that her niece grabbed her by the neck and damaged a pair of progressive lens glasses. Martin said that her niece’s husband intervened and that the couple had already left the county and gone back to Cartersville. Martin said she didn’t want to file charges, but did want her niece to pay for the glasses. A police officer said that a report would be filed and advised the complainant about magistrate procedures.
