NFPA: Make Sure You Have Working Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out, according to the National Fire Protection Association.  Local fire departments are urging people to make sure that they have working smoke alarms.  Already, during the first half of April there have been house fires in Chattooga County where firefighters responded and there were no working smoke alarms.

Georgia Tax Collections Drop In March

The Georgia Department of Revenue says that tax collections were down for the month of March, around 3% off from the 2022 collections.  The state agency brought in $2.68 billion in taxes in March, down about $83 million from March 2022.

Chattooga High School Senior Signs Rodeo Scholarship

Last week, Chattooga High School Senior Emma Rae Ward signed to a rodeo scholarship with Northeast Texas Community College.  The college is located in Mount Pleasant, Texas.  Emma Rae was joined by her parents, Jeff and Mandy Ward; her grandparents David and Diane Ward and David and Maxine Cargle and her sister Morgan Ward at the signing ceremony at Chattooga High School this past week.  Also, rodeo coach Justin Hampton and his wife Jennifer traveled from Texas for the ceremony.  Emma Rae is an outstanding senior at Chattooga High School and has reported sports for WZQZ radio.  WZQZ would like to congratulate Emma Rae on signing with Northeast Texas.

Man Arrested For Animal Cruelty After Abandoning Pigs

A forty-six-year-old man was arrested by Walker County authorities this past week after charges that he abandoned several pigs in the Rossville area.

Low COVID Numbers Reported

The number of COVID-19 cases continues to drop in Northwest Georgia.  Last week Chattooga County reported two cases, this week there was one new case reported. Neighboring Floyd County had no new cases of COVID-19, but did report one COVID-related death, according to the numbers released by the Georgia Department of Public Health.  This past week’s numbers were some of the lowest numbers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  The new numbers for each county are released on Wednesday of each week.
