AG Wants To Jam Contraband Cell Phones At Georgia’s Prisons

Over the years, there have been many reports about cell phones in Georgia’s prisons.  WZQZ has reported many times on confiscated cell phones at Hays State Prison in Chattooga County.  Now, Georgia’s attorney general is wanting to do something about the illegal cell phones that find their way into the state’s correctional facilities.

Bear Sightings Increasing In Our Area

Chattooga County has been having increased sightings of black bears, and that is not uncommon according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  Bear sightings in remote areas of the county like Lookout Mountain have been common for years, but increasingly, there are more reports of sightings in more populated areas of the county as well.

GSP Releases Information On Last Week’s Motorcycle Chase

Last Saturday, a twenty-seven-year-old Calhoun man took Georgia State Troopers and law enforcement officers in four counties on a chase.  The Georgia State Patrol says Christian Tyler Senn was driving a motorcycle at a high rate of speed when the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office asked for assistance from state troopers.

USPS Raising Rates – Again

This week, the United States Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) of mailing services price changes to take effect July 9, 2023. The new rates include a three-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 63 cents to 66 cents.

Gene Espy To Speak At Historical Society Meeting On Sunday

The Summerville News has been a mainstay in Chattooga County for over 125 years and the paper has been in the hands of the Espy family for generations.  The weekly paper will be the focus of the Chattooga County Historical Society as they gather for their spring meeting tomorrow at the historic Summerville Depot in downtown Summerville.  Gene Espy will be the featured speaker and will be talking about the long history of the newspaper and sharing stories from the newspaper and Chattooga County’s past.  The meetings of the Chattooga County Historical Society are free and open to the public.  Tomorrow’s meeting gets underway at 2 PM.

Mohawk Donates Flooring To Senior Center

One of Chattooga County’s largest employers made a generous donation to the Chattooga County Senior Center earlier this week. Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry said, “We want to say thank you to Mohawk Industries for their continued community support and generous donation of new flooring for the Chattooga County Senior Center”.  The senior center has been undergoing renovations for several months and the new flooring will be used to upgrade the existing, original flooring at the building.  Paul Meredith and Mickey McGraw from Mohawk in Summerville presented the flooring earlier this week, with Commissioner Elsberry on hand.
