Rome Police Investigating Apparent Murder-Suicide

Two people are dead following a murder-suicide that occurred on the property of the Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday morning.

At 7:00 AM Rome Police officers were dispatched to a reported car accident with injuries near the Restaurant on Shorter Avenue.

Prior to arrival officers received more information that the incident was a shooting rather than an accident.

An initial investigation indicates that a man shot a woman and then shot himself.

The identities of the shooter and the victim have not been released at the time of this report.

Chattooga Tax Commissioner Releases Annual Report

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton has released her annual report for the taxpayers of Chattooga County.  Tax Commissioner Hampton said, “In an effort to be as transparent as possible, I have outlined incoming funds and outgoing funds; however, the outside audit performed yearly will have the most detailed accounting of funds. Over 17 million dollars was handled in
my office last year and paid to the levying authorities. Fraudulent Check Passed At Summerville Bank

The Summerville Police Department received a call last Thursday from an Atlanta business that manages several properties in Chattooga County about a fraudulent check.  While speaking with the officer, the complainant with Jackson Rents Atlanta, LLC. , said that a $1250 check had been presented at Truist Bank in Summerville and was cashed.  The complainant believes that someone used the routing number and checking account number off of a legitimate check and made the fraudulent check.  The suspect attempted to do the same thing at Truist Bank in Rome and Grayson, Georgia, but the bank contacted Jackson Rents Atlanta to verify the authenticity of the checks presented and ultimately refused to cash them.  The incident has been turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.

Man Arrested After Incident With School Bus

A sixty-nine-year-old man was arrested last week after he was caught on video using foul language around children on a school bus.  According to a report released on Tuesday by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the incident followed a minor accident at Sunset Drive and Cooper Heights with a Chattooga County School bus on Thursday of last week.  The bus had backed into a vehicle driven by the suspect, and while the suspect was speaking with the school bus driver he began to curse, using the “F” word with children present.  The bus driver also said that the suspect also threatened to use a gun, telling the bus driver “You better be bullet proof” – which was confirmed in the recording.  Edwin Lee Raughton was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct.

Trion Police Chief David Gilleland says that Allgood Street, from Central to Park Avenue, is closed due to a tile replacement.  Please use Simmons Street and turn right to return to Allgood Street.  Allgood Street should open again sometime on Wednesday.
