Sheriff’s Office Looking Into Stolen Natural Gas

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office is looking into allegations that two former City of Summerville employees stole natural gas at their homes.  Summerville Police asked the sheriff’s office to take over the investigation.  The two employees have been fired, but city officials are also looking into whether or not former employees have also used natural gas without paying for it in the past.  The incident came to light after a city meter reader found a discrepancy at the now, former employee’s residences.

Chattooga Historical Society Has Baker’s Book Available

The Chattooga County Historical Society has reprinted 100 more copies of Robert Baker’s history of Chattooga County. The 1000 page book covers from the beginning of the county onward. There are sections on families, churches, businesses, notable people, schools, local government . It is a great resource and an interesting read and is considered the definitive book covering the history of the county.  The cost is $65.00 as is available at the Chattooga County Library and on the historical society’s  website at www.chattoogahistory.org

Summerville Moves Forward With Lawsuit Pertaining To PFAS

Summerville officials say that they are moving forward in a lawsuit against the manufacturers of so-called “forever chemicals” that made their way into the city’s drinking water via Raccoon Creek.

DECAL Seeks Nonprofits To Serve Meals This Summer

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) is looking for nonprofit organizations to serve free healthy meals and snacks to children this summer through Happy Helpings, Georgia’s Summer Food Service Program. Organizations that are approved to serve meals will be reimbursed for every eligible meal that meets USDA’s nutritional guidelines.

Sheriff’s Office Investigating Child Abuse Report

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child abuse case that was reported last week.  According to a report from the sheriff’s office, the mother of a juvenile child reported that while her son was with his father, he was whipped with a belt and the corporal punishment left marks on the boy’s legs.  According to the mother, the child’s father’s wife had instructed the father to whip the child.  The responding deputy took the report and said it would be turned over to an investigator with the sheriff’s office.

Georgia Supreme Court Disagrees With JDC On Coomer’s Case

In a ruling this week, the Georgia Supreme Court said that the state’s Judicial Qualification Commission (JQC) does not have jurisdiction to look into a judge’s actions before he was on the bench.  The ruling came after an appeal by former State Rep. Christian Coomer who now serves as a judge. The JQC recommended be removed from the bench.  Coomer was facing allegations that he fixed loans in his favor and that he violated campaign rules while he was a private attorney.  The JQC has 60 days to refile charges against Coomer.
