Cold Front Brings Chill to Georgia, Precipitation Expected Midweek

A strong high-pressure system is moving into the Southeast today and Tuesday, causing a change for our weather in Northwest Georgia.

This system, coming from central Canada, will interact with a storm over Nova Scotia, leading to persistent northwest winds. Winds are expected to gust near 20 mph this morning before easing in the afternoon. As a result, temperatures will drop below average by 6 to 12 degrees, with afternoon highs only in the 40’s here in northwest Georgia with plenty of sunshine. Lower humidity levels of 25% to 35% will make the air feel crisper.

Looking ahead, calm winds and below-freezing temperatures are expected tonight, promising stable weather on Tuesday. The high-pressure system will result in light winds of 5 mph or less in the afternoon, causing a slight temperature increase of 5 to 9 degrees compared to Monday. However, there will be fewer sunny periods due to high cloud cover moving in from the west. On Wednesday, a merger of weather fronts will likely create a surface low south of the central Gulf Coast, bringing precipitation northward.

Northwest Georgia might see light snow or a rain/snow mix, especially in higher elevation areas. Rain is expected to increase throughout the day across most of the state, with totals ranging from nearly 0. 25 inches in the north to up to 1 inch in the south-central region. Light flurries may persist in the north late Wednesday into early Thursday. After this system, frigid temperatures will return on Thursday, with lows in the low 20’s and teens. Residents are advised to “protect the 4 P’s: people, pets, pipes, and plants” from the coming cold snap, especially on Friday morning when lows may be in the teens in Northwest Georgia.

A strong surface high moving southeast will keep conditions dry and stable into the weekend.
