School closed on Thursday and Friday Chattooga County Schools to Close Due to Hurricane Helene
On Wednesday afternoon, Chattooga County School Supt. Michelle Helie announced that school would be canceled for all county schools on Thursday and Friday. You can read the full statement below:
With a Flood Watch already in effect, the National Weather Service has now issued a Tropical Storm Watch for parts of northwest Georgia, including Chattooga County. This means that tropical storm-force winds of 39 to 57 mph are possible over the next 48 hours. While the peak wind gusts are only expected to reach 40 mph, this is still enough to bring the potential for significant wind damage. Residents need to be prepared for hazardous wind conditions equivalent to a tropical storm.
Shortly after 9 AM on Wednesday morning, an emergency call came in reporting a vehicle that had veered off the road and become trapped near the intersection of Highway 27 and Silverhill Road. The initial dispatch alerted multiple first responder units, including the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Emergency Medical Services, Gore Fire Department, and Subligna Fire Department.

The Trion vs Manchester game scheduled for this Friday night has been rescheduled due to weather. Per Trion Head Football Coach Sean Patrick, the game has been moved to Saturday at 3pm.

A flood watch has been issued for Chattooga County and the entirety of Northwest Georgia, as the threat of excessive rainfall and potential flooding remains high through Friday afternoon. Forecasters warn that the combination of heavy downpours expected across the region could lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas that are prone to overflowing. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks and poor drainage areas could also experience flooding issues.
The initial heavy rainfall is expected to move in across north Georgia starting this afternoon and continuing through tonight, potentially causing localized flash flooding in some areas. However, the more widespread and torrential rainfall is anticipated to overspread the region on Thursday and Thursday night as Tropical Storm Helene approaches the area. Storm total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, with even higher localized amounts, are projected through Friday. Given the extended duration and significant rainfall totals in the forecast, residents should be prepared for the possibility of extensive flooding developments throughout the period.
In response to this threat, the City of Summerville will be making sandbag materials available to its residents starting on Tuesday, September 24th. Bags, ties, and sand will be provided at the Gas Lot located at 74 Henry St, with residents responsible for filling the sandbags themselves. For those needing assistance, the Summerville Public Works Department and City Hall can be contacted prior to 5:00 pm. Residents are advised to closely monitor the latest forecasts and be ready to take action if flood warnings are issued for the area. With the potential for significant rainfall and widespread flooding, preparedness will be key over the coming days.
