The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia. The tropical storm warning in effect signifies that residents in the affected area should be on high alert for the impending arrival of tropical storm-force winds within the next 36 hours. According to the latest local forecast, wind speeds are expected to peak between 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, which falls within the 39-57 mph range considered to be potential tropical storm-force winds. This poses a real threat to the region, as such winds have the potential to cause damage to structures like porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and even unanchored mobile homes.
Unsecured lightweight objects may also be blown about, creating additional hazards. The winds are also likely to topple many large tree limbs, and in some cases, even snap or uproot entire trees, especially in areas where the root systems are shallow. This could lead to blocked roads from fallen debris, as well as damage to fences and road signs. Power and communications outages are also a distinct possibility due to the high winds. In addition to the wind threat, the area is also under a Flood Watch, with forecasts calling for an additional 3-6 inches of rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible. This raises the specter of major flooding, which could prompt widespread evacuations and rescues as rivers, streams, and other waterways overflow their banks. Flood waters may inundate many structures, rendering some uninhabitable, while also covering escape routes and creating treacherous driving conditions on roads and bridges.
While the threat of tornadoes is considered low, residents are still advised to remain vigilant and heed any changes to the forecast. Overall, the combination of high winds and the potential for extensive flooding rains means that those in the affected areas must take the tropical storm warning seriously and make the necessary preparations to protect themselves and their property.
