The Trion High School soccer teams will be hosting a camp for grades kindergarten through the eighth grade at the practice field. The camp will focus on game development and skill enhancement for players either new to the game or looking to improve ahead of next season. Campers who plan to attend should bring water, cleats and a soccer ball if possible. Registration is $50 and goes towards funding the Trion High School Boys Soccer Team. Georgia tops the nation in the number of people that fall for scams, that according to a recent report showing the Peach State had 177,000 fraud cases over the past year. Georgia takes the top spot as the state that suffers the highest rates of fraud. The state’s top scamming method is imposter scams, followed by others phony tactics like online shopping, internet service fraud, and business and job opportunities. Georgia has frequently ranked high as it relates to fraud incidents. The numbers come from reports to the Federal Trade Commission regarding scams in each state.
From the Georgia DOT: Weather permitting, crews will close 2nd Avenue between Shorter Avenue and State Route 101 starting on Tuesday of this week. The right northbound lane on 2nd Avenue will be closed from West 3rd Street to just before the freight receiving entrance of Floyd Medical Center. Along with those closures, a temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of SR 101 and Turner McCall Boulevard. The work is part of the project on 2nd Avenue that will include improvements along the route and remove the closed section of roadway. The project is slated to be completed in Fall 2026.
A Chattooga County teen was charged with DUI for drugs last Sunday after being stopped at B&B Market on Old Highway 27 in Trion. According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies performed a traffic stop after they noticed that the vehicle eighteen-year-old Hayden Lee Snyder was driving was not displaying a license plate. A deputy noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle as he spoke with Snyder. After a search of the vehicle, deputies found a baggy with suspected marijuana inside. Snyder was unable to pass several impairment tests and was placed under arrest for DUI for drugs and was additionally charged with driving with suspended or canceled registration.
The Summerville City Council will be considering mobile home requests at the August City Council meeting. The city has advertised that they will hear a request from Joseph Wilson concerning property located at 203 Henley Street. Also, the council will hear from Simone Adams with a mobile home request for property located on Cherry Avenue which is not currently zoned for mobile homes. The meeting will be held on Monday, August 12th at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall.
Welcome Hill Baptist Church in Trion will be holding Homecoming services today with the service starting at 10:30 AM. The guest speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Norton and Scott Bran Ministries will be bringing special music. Lunch will be provided immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Pastor Terry Shores and the congregation at Welcome Hill invited everyone to attend.
An inmate at the Floyd County Prison, Jonathan McGee, 43 of Cartersville, has been pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in his cell. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, McGee was found last week by prison staff who say that McGee had overdosed on an unspecified drug on Tuesday of this past week. He was pronounced brain dead on Wednesday. McGee had been housed at the Floyd County Prison since April of 2023 on burglary charges.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson announced this past Thursday that all of Georgia’s Regional Commissions and many of the 159 counties in the state reported a rise in June unemployment rates – including Chattooga County.
