The Summerville Fire Department recently took delivery on a new Marion Firetruck. The fire department has now listed their oldest engine on Gove Deals Dot Com. The truck they are selling is a 1989 E-One Ford Pumper truck. The truck was taken out of service in June. According to local fire department officials, “(the truck) Cranks, Runs, and Drives. This would be a good truck for another department or to use on a farm”. You can see the online auction listing HERE

The Chattooga County Democratic Party will meet on Monday, July 15 at the Summerville Senior Center. The meeting will begin at 6pm. Members will be asked to help write and stamp postcards to swing voters for the upcoming general election. Future projects will also be discussed. All members are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
According to a report released this week by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, on June 19th, Walter Whitton was spotted in Trion near the triangle shopping center With a “spider webbed” crack across the windshield of his vehicle. Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies knew that Whitton already had outstanding complaints against him regarding drugs. After seeing Whitton cross over yellow lines, his tag was ran and found to be expired. After conducting a traffic stop with Whitton, it was clear that he was very nervous and shaking. He stated that he didn’t have any drugs in his vehicle. After further inspection he was found to have open beer cans, drug related objects, and a plastic bag with methamphetamines inside. Whitton was then arrested for possession of methamphetamines, possession of drug related objects and a traffic citation for the expired tag.

On Friday of last week, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies were responding to a call from Wal-Mart regarding a shoplifting occurrence. After arriving on scene, a deputy spoke with Wal-Mart’s Asset Protection associate about the female subject. Video proof showed that Ashley Blackmon was using self checkout and paid for many items but was concealing unpaid items under Walmart bags in her cart. The items concealed in her cart were worth $66.28. Blackmon was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chattooga County jail.
Walker County dispatchers received a call yesterday afternoon shortly after 1 PM about a structure fire at 14 Rayleigh Drive in LaFayette. After reportedly hearing lightning strike his house, the homeowner went outside and noticed smoke coming from the attic area, prompting him to call 911.
Firefighters arrived to find visible flames coming from the home. As part of their fire suppression, they ventilated the roof to keep the fire from spreading beyond the attic. It took firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control.
There were no injuries, but the house sustained fire damage to the attic and water damage to other areas.
According to a report released this past week by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s office, on June 23rd, Deputies were made aware of a possible drunk driver during a stationary patrol. They followed the suspected vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Brandon Simpson appeared under the influence of alcohol as his mannerisms and movements were very slow and his eyes were heavy. Simpson was asked to exit the vehicle and was swaying and staggering back and forth. He told the deputies he had been drinking enough to be put behind bars. Simpson agreed to do a Field Sobriety test, to which he could not complete the tasks asked of him. He stated he couldn’t do a breathalyzer test and was then placed under arrest for DUI. The deputies also found many open alcoholic beverage containers in his vehicle.
Summerville Main Street and the Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a ribbon cutting next week on Tuesday, July 9th at a new downtown home décor business. MJ Designs will be located at 9974 Commerce Street in the former State Farm Insurance office at the corner of Georgia Avenue. MJ Designs currently has a booth at River City in Rome and features artwork, vintage décor, lamps, new and antique furniture. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 11 AM and the public is invited to attend.
