The Postmaster General says on-time delivery rates at the beleaguered Palmetto, Georgia post office facility are up over 80%, but Georgia’s U.S. senator says it’s still not good enough.  Senator John Ossoff has been persistent in pressuring  Postmaster Louis DeJoy for months or solutions to the problems at Georgia’s largest mail processing facility.  While the USPS might be happy with the progress, Senator Ossoff says it still isn’t good enough because 20% of mail still isn’t being delivered on time.  Senator Ossoff has indicated that he will pressure the board that oversees the United States Postal Service to fire DeJoy if things don’t improve.

A Tennessee-based renewable energy company is looking to build a facility at the Town of Trion industrial park that would convert chicken manure into natural gas.  Johnson Energy Solutions, based in Soddy Daisy, says that with the abundance of poultry farms in the Northwest Georgia area, the plant would be able to provide a service by taking the chicken waste and turning it into natural gas – also the company would produce fertilizer as a byproduct of the process.

Governor Brian P. Kemp, in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), on Monday announced the initiation of an in-depth, system-wide assessment of the state corrections system to identify current strengths, opportunities, and recommendations to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. This marks the latest measure to improve public safety for all Georgians following a multi-year effort to crack down on crime, take violent offenders off the streets, provide further support and training for state and local law enforcement, and invest well over 1.6 billion additional dollars into public safety since Governor Kemp took office.

A Cartersville man has been charged in the theft of several items from a Summerville woman that occurred last month, on May 17, at Chili’s on Turner McCall Boulevard in Rome.  Floyd County Police say that an arrest warrant was taken out on forty-one-year-old Geoffrey Scott Bennett who stole a purse from the Chattooga County woman at the restaurant.  Bennett, who was an employee of Chili’s allegedly took the pocketbook to his home where it was found after police obtained a search warrant.  The contents inside included Apple Airpods, valued at $100; credit and debit cards; $106 in cash; makeup, valued at $95; and the victim’s identification cards. Bennett is charged with felony theft by taking.

Georgia’s Commissioner of Veterans Services Patricia Ross told state lawmakers this week that the state is seriously underfunding veterans services.  The state’s two veterans homes in Milledgeville and Augusta currently are serving about 400 veterans, far below the estimated need of 1,975.  Other states in the South with smaller populations operate multiple veterans homes, compared to Georgia’s two.  Add to that, Georgia veterans tend to have a hard time obtaining mental health services because they are uninsured at about twice the rate of the general public.  Ross said there have been some success stories in Georgia, including the hiring of a suicide prevention outreach coordinator two years ago who has reached out to 12,244 veterans.  The state also will have a full-time coordinator to focus on veterans’ housing needs starting July 1, she said.

Georgia’s U.S. Senators John Ossoff and Raphael Warnock have introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate to rename the Federal Courthouse in Rome in honor of Judge Harold Murphy.
