Summer will officially arrive this Thursday, June 20th, but the Summer heat has already arrived. Local physicians and public health officials are warning people to take the proper precautions to stay safe amid sizzling temperatures.

Summerville Main Street invites the public to celebrate southern foods and traditions as they host A Taste of The South Festival on Saturday, June 22 during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.at the Historic Summerville Depot and up the East Washington Street Streetscape. This free public event is planned to help eventgoers take a step back in time and share a fondness for good old fashioned southern food, fun and traditions.
A thirty-nine-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after he was observed yelling at passing cars while totally naked. Summerville Police responded to 10534 Commerce Street where they found Angelo Nicholas Marks “standing outside, completely nude, screaming at passersby on Highway 27”, according to the police report. Marks told officers that he was having an argument with his wife and “decided to get naked”. Marks was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail on charges of public indecency.

When Dixie Dye shut down in May of 2022, it was a huge blow to the Trion Industrial Park. The closing of the business affected about 80 workers. The Town of Trion had donated about 12 acres to the company when the manufacturing facility was built and gave the company a huge tax abatement in 2018. Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas says that there is some potentially good news for the industrial park as a new industry is expressing interest in locating there. A meeting will be held this evening at 6 PM at Trion Town Hall to discuss the new industry and the Trion Industrial Park. The public is invited to attend.
Travis Turner, chairman of the White County Board of Commissioners, has been appointed by the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) to lead the General County Government Committee. The announcement was made Thursday by ACCG President David Sikes of Toombs County. Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Blake Elsberry was named vice-chair of the committee. The General County Government Committee is responsible for addressing issues involving county government and intergovernmental relations, elections, ethics, home rule, service delivery, planning and zoning, and other key issues impacting county government.
The Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) is pleased to announce the award of a $19,493,349.00 Hazard Mitigation Grant Program project aimed at providing emergency backup power for critical facilities across the state. This funding will enable 43 local governments and 2 state agencies to enhance their preparedness and resilience to natural hazards.
Georgia gas prices are holding steady at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.28 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 1 cent less than a week ago, 12 cents less than a month ago, and 1 cent less than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $49.20 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying approximately $2.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to a month ago.
