While Sales and Use Taxes were up in Georgia during the month of May, overall May’s tax revenue was down by over $26 million compared to the previous year. The year-to-date net tax revenue is down by almost $30 Billion. Notably, Corporate Income Tax was off by over $38 million last month while Motor Fuel Taxes were up by over $11 million. Georgia is one of only a handful of states in the Union that requires runoff elections. If a candidate doesn’t get a 50-plus majority of votes in a Primary or General Election, then a runoff election must be held between the top-two vote getters.
On Saturday, Summerville Police responded to a Scoggins Street address shortly after 9 PM and spoke with a complainant who said someone had fired a shot at his mobile home. The complainant told police that the shot hit in the area of his bedroom. Police said that they did see where the trailer was hit, but could not find any shell casings in the area. Police provided extra patrol in the area and turned the incident over to an investigator.

With the extremely hot temperatures lately, the Georgia Department of Transportation is reminding Georgia residents to never leave a child alone in a hot vehicle.
One of the most easily identifiable birds, the Canada goose has the amazing ability to thrive in a variety of habitats. However, those habitats often include people-centric areas such as neighborhoods, office complexes, city parks and other developed areas.
A fifty-eight-year-old woman was arrested for DUI after admitting to a Chattooga County Deputy that she had “smoked a blunt” before leaving a party on June 8th.
According to a report from the sheriff’s office, Lettice McColl was stopped around 11:30 PM at a safety checkpoint on Back Penn Road. When she stopped at the checkpoint, the deputy noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
No marijuana was found inside the vehicle, but McColl did say she had smoked marijuana before leaving the party, and she had a solo cup with a mixed alcoholic drink in the console of the vehicle. She told the deputy that she had “mixed a drink to take home with her” from the party.
After failing field sobriety tests, McColl was arrested and charged with open container and DUI for multiple substances.
Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that property owners have been receiving some property tax tips in the mail. The informational guide gives information about when taxes are due and general information about property taxes, as well as the office hours for the Chattooga County Tax Office. Also the mailer is reminding property owners that the HTRG – or Home Owner Tax Relief Grant – was one-time grant money that was applied to homestead property tax bills this year. The credit will not be available for 2024 property taxes. The tax commissioner is encouraging property owners to make plans now to save for 2024 tax bills, as they could see an increase in the amount due. Also, Tax Commissioner Hampton reminds tax payers that the Chattooga County Tax Office does offer payment plans and pre-payment options for property tax bills.
ATV accidents increase in the summertime and sometimes those accidents end in fatalities like the one that happened recently to a Cherokee County, Georgia child who was killed in Chattooga County on June 8th.
