On Friday of last week, store employees with Ingles Supermarket in Summerville called police after a man attempted to pass a fake $100 bill.  When police arrived at the supermarket, they spoke with thirty-eight-year-old Teddy James Elrod who told them that he had sold a computer monitor the day before.  Elrod said that he sold the computer equipment on Facebook marketplace and had no idea who he had sold it to because he “was intoxicated at the time”.  Mr. Elrod told police that he had no idea that the money was fake.  There was no indication in the report from the Summerville Police Department that Mr. Elrod was charged with any crime.

Georgia gas prices remains steady at the pump. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.36 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was the same as a week ago, is 10 cents less than a month ago, and 7 cents more than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $50.40 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying almost $2.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to a month ago.

Florida-based Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. is recalling cucumbers shipped to wholesalers and distributors in 14 states from May 17th through May 21. The recalled cucumbers are dark green, approximately 1.5 – 2.0 inches in diameter, and 5-9 inches long. Mini cucumbers and English cucumbers are not included in this recall.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, Summerville Police spotted a vehicle at Pay-N-Tote on the Lyerly Highway that they believed to be driven by a man who was on probation and had removed an electronic ankle monitor.  Police approached the vehicle and identified the driver as thirty-eight-year-old Jesse Lee Hayes.  Hayes had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear and had also failed required probation drug tests.  A passenger, identified as thirty-three-year-old Samantha Seeger was also inside the vehicle with a juvenile.  Police say that they could smell the odor of burnt marijuana inside the vehicle and subsequently found a vape pen with suspected THC.  Hayes was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession or use of drug related objects and failure to appear.  Because neither Hayes or Seeger claimed the suspected methamphetamine, police say that a warrant will be issued for Seeger’s arrest.

On Friday of last week, a Summerville resident came to the Summerville Police Department and said that they needed to talk with an investigator about a case of insurance fraud.  The complainant told a responding officer that his step-father had a Harley Davidson motorcycle that had been broken down for some time.  The man told police that his stepfather and another man had fabricated a story about an accident in order to collect insurance money on the motorcycle.  The man also said that he had spoken with a representative from the insurance company about the possible fraud, and the insurance company told him to go to police and file a report.  The incident was turned over to an investigator.

The Community Resource Center of Chattooga County has a goal of making sure that no one ever goes hungry or without the basic essentials they need that lives in Chattooga County.  They offer free food distribution three days a week from noon until 3:30 PM.  The food distribution is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 50 Eleanor Avenue in Summerville.  Currently, CRC of Chattooga County is looking for personal shoppers.  Volunteers who could donate a couple of hours, mainly on Fridays, can contact CRC of Chattooga County at 706-808-0477.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has partnered with the Aimee Copeland Foundation to provide free, high mobility all-terrain wheelchairs at 10 state parks, historic sites and a wildlife center, including Cloudland Canyon State Park in Northwest Georgia.
