State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee), who represents all of Chattooga County and a portion of the surrounding area in the Georgia House, says that he wants to focus on recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers in the 2025 General Assembly legislative session.
Chattooga’s Summer Feeding Program officially starts today. This program allows meals to all children under the age of 18, free of charge. The Summer Feeding Program will run from today until July 16th. They will not have any meal service during the week of July 1 – 5, in observance of the July 4th Holiday.
U.S. Senator John Ossoff continues to put pressure on the US Postal Service (USPS) saying the delays that are happening with the mail system are unacceptable for Georgia residents. Ossoff has said that a 36% on-time delivery rate is not something that Georgia residents should have to deal with.
Summerville Police Chief Brian Ozment has been named the new Public Safety Director for the City of Summerville. Ozment, who has served with the Summerville Police Department since 1993, will oversee the operations of both the police and fire departments as public safety director.
Floyd County Police say that a fifty-nine-year-old Floyd County man jumped in a lake off Floyd Springs Road to avoid arrest. According to reports from the Floyd County Police Department, Ray Ellis Carver was accused of violating a court order to stay away from a female, but violated that order and approached the woman. At one point, Carver is accused of grabbing the woman by the shirt. When police came to the scene, Carver ran and attempted to evade capture by jumping in a nearby lake. Carver was jailed and charged with simple battery, obstruction of law enforcement officers and aggravated stalking.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety issued final counts last week for the Memorial Day Holiday travel period. Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated eight fatal traffic crashes, and local law enforcement agencies investigated three fatal traffic crashes resulting in 11 deaths across the state during the 78-hour Memorial Day holiday travel period.
Summerville Police responded to a call last week about damage to a church on West First Street. On Thursday, a responding officer met with a church member who showed the officer the church sign that had been damaged. Someone had taken the letters off the church sign and had broken them into small pieces. Several planters outside the church building at Redemption Worship Center had been turned over and a metal protection post had been bent over. A report was made at the request of the church member.
