After five years as Chattooga 4H Director, Zach White has announced that he will be leaving the position at the Chattooga County Extension Office.  Chattooga County has one of the most active and vibrant 4H Programs in the state.  The program is active in every school in Chattooga County – both with the county school system and Trion City Schools.  The job of Chattooga County 4H Director has been posted and applications for the position are being accepted.  You can find out more about the position HERE.

An eighteen-year-old man was arrested by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday at Walmart in Trion after he was accused of stealing Lego toys.  A Walmart employee told a responding deputy that she observed Landon James Clift put two sets of Legos inside a backpack and leave the store without paying.  The incident was caught on camera.  The value of the Legos was $96. Clift was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail on charges of shoplifting.

A Summerville Police officer on patrol on Sunday afternoon noticed a storage unit that appeared to have been broke into.  According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, Lieutenant  Philip Cox  was on patrol on Commerce Street near the Circle K Convenience Store.  Cox noticed that the chain link fence around Benny’s Storage Units appeared to have been cut.  On closer observation, Cox could see that someone had cut the fence and that two storage units had been broken into.  Chattooga 911 notified the renters of the storage units about the break in.  At the time of the report, there was no list of items that may have been missing from the units and the incident has been turned over to an investigator.

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs awarded Chattooga County with a $1 million community development block grant (CDBG) in 2023.  The money is being used for water improvement projects on aging and failing water lines and fire hydrants.

Georgia Highlands College (GHC) has announced students named to the Spring 2024 President’s List and Dean’s List. To achieve President’s List status, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average and attain a minimum of nine semester hours of credit. To make Dean’s List students, must complete a minimum of nine semester hours and achieve at least a 3.5 average.

Chattooga High School has announced that Jason Johns has been named the Chattooga High School head wrestling coach for the 2024-2025 school year. Coach Johns brings seventeen-plus years of coaching experience to the Chattooga High School wrestling program and is currently a science teacher at Chattooga High School. Johns played at Cleveland High School, TN, where his team won back-to-back state titles his junior and senior years. Johns says that he is excited to continue the long wrestling tradition at Chattooga.

A longtime area pastor and former employee of the City of Summerville passed away on Monday of this week.  Rev. Gerald Dewayne Teague pastored churches in Georgia, Alabama and Alaska, with thirty years spent as pastor at Sardis Baptist Church in Chattoogaville.
