School is out for both Trion and Chattooga school systems and kids are getting ready to enjoy their summer, but already Chattooga Family Connection is planning the 2024-2025 school year Back to School Bash. The event has grown each year and hundreds of backpacks and school supplies are given out each year. This year, the back-to-school bash will be held at the Chattooga High School War Lodge on Thursday, July 18th, from 4 PM – 6 PM. Chattooga County’s unemployment rate dropped by two-tenths of a point from March to April, according to numbers released last Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor. The total number of unemployed workers that filed first-time unemployment claims in April of this year was 303; down from 359 in March. The unemployment rate for the month of April was at 3.2% compared to 3.4% the previous month. At the same time last year, unemployment was at 3.8%. The latest numbers show that there are currently 9,188 Chattooga County residents who are employed. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said in a statement last Thursday, “From the state to the local level, Georgia is focused on creating an environment where businesses can thrive, and everyday workers can find good jobs and build better lives.”
It’s one of the largest fundraisers for the local 4H Program in Chattooga County – the annual Georgia Peach Sale. Each year, Chattooga 4H sells Georgia-grown Dickey Farms peaches from Musella, Georgia. These are freestone peaches and are great for canning, freezing or making some good homemade peach ice cream. Orders for 25-pound boxes of peaches are being taken until June 28th. The cost this year is $40 per box and all the proceeds will go to help Chattooga County 4H’s many programs. Georgia is experiencing a sever shortage of game wardens, partly due to budget cuts over the past several years. The Georgia General Assembly has allotted the Georgia Department of Natural Resources fund to hire six new game wardens this year. But Col. Mike England, director of the agency, says that will not make a dent in the number of game wardens that are needed to cover all 159 counties in Georgia. England says that pay raises for DNR Law Enforcement that have been granted as part of the Governor’s plan to up the pay of state employees across the board is a good thing, but much more is needed to hire, train and retain game wardens in the Peach State. Georgia’s game wardens only get one weekend a month off and are on call twenty-four hours a day. Right now, the average salary of a Georgia game warden is less than $38,000 per year.
