Nearly 30% of Americans don’t know that looking directly into a solar eclipse without proper eye protection can cause permanent distortions or blind spots in their vision, according to a new study. Now, Georgia’s doctors of optometry are offering safe viewing tips for the Total Solar Eclipse that will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. In Georgia, according to sources, around 84.7% of the sun will be obscured by the moon with the eclipse starting around 1:45 p.m. and peaking at 3:04 p.m.
With no winners in over four months, the Powerball jackpot continues to climb and inch toward shattering new records.
The jackpot currently sits at an estimated $1.23 billion with a $595.1 million cash value before tonight’s drawing. It is the fourth-largest prize in Powerball history, according to the lottery.
No one has won the Powerball jackpot since Jan. 1, when a player in Michigan won the $842 million jackpot.
The largest Powerball jackpot ever won was in November 2022, when a single winner in California walked away with the $2.04 billion prize.
The winning numbers from the Wednesday, April 3 drawing were 11, 38, 41, 62 and 65. The red Powerball was 15 and the Power Play was 3X.
A forty-year-old Chattooga County man will stand trial in Chattooga County Superior Court in connection with an incident that happened on Ragland Road in Lyerly on November 20th of last year. WZQZ News reported that Eric Neal Slater was arrested after being accused of firing two shots at a house, hitting a transformer and knocking out power to the residence. Another shot struck an air conditioner at the residence. Slater was also accused of texting and threatening to kill the victim. The Chattooga County Grand Jury found that there was enough evidence for Slater to stand trial on the charges.
A thirty-three-year-old inmate at Hays State Prison has been indicted by the Chattooga County Grand Jury. Domonique Royal was sentenced to prison in 2013 on charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Bulloch County. Royal’s prison sentence was to have been up in June of last year, but he is being held after being charged with rioting in a penal institution. The grand jury handed down an indictment against Royal who will be facing charges in Chattooga County Superior Court.
Six candidates have qualified to run for Seat Number One on the Summerville City Council during a special election that will be held next month. The seat came open after the death of former Summerville City Councilman David Ford last month. Ford had served on the council for twelve years. The winning candidate will fill the unexpired term of Mr. Ford. Those qualifying were:

Motorists are being reminded that the West Rome bypass will be closed for a movie production between Blacks Bluff Road and Highway 27 South through Sunday.
According to a report released yesterday by the Summerville Police Department, a twenty-four-year-old female complainant at an apartment unit on Orchard Road called for police after a man was at the apartment banging on the door. The responding officer spoke with the complainant who identified the suspect to police. The complainant said that the man was irate because the woman “didn’t want to be with her anymore” and beat on the door repeatedly while acting belligerent. Two witnesses at the apartment confirmed the complainant’s story. The complainant said that she wanted a report filed, but she didn’t want to press any charges.
