A thirty-two-year-old Menlo man was arrested by Summerville Police after a traffic stop earlier this month. According to a report released yesterday by the police department, an officer on patrol on Scoggins Street on March 15th, stopped a vehicle for not having tag lights. While speaking to the driver, identified as Cody Ray Harmon, the officer noticed that the driver was very nervous and would not look at the officer. Suspecting impairment, the officer received consent to search the vehicle and found suspected methamphetamine and a marijuana grinder inside the car. Harmon was arrested on drug charges and driving under the influence of drugs and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
State Senator Colton Moore, who represents Chattooga and surrounding counties in the Georgia State Senate, presented a resolution last week on the floor of the senate to honor the life of Laken Hope Riley, the UGA Nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant. Senator Moore said that Riley “had a heart for caring for others” and that he hopes that Riley’s legacy will live on. Local balloon artist Misty Clements owner/designer of Creations by Misty, LLC traveled to Atlanta, Ga on March 16th for a hands on balloon workshop training with Oscar Baker, CEO owner of Lou & Lee Events & Designs of Atlanta Ga. Misty participated in this class, alongside of 25 additional ladies who traveled from California, Illinois, Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Guardian Insurance Partners Agent Adam Lee and Allen Keen Realty are sponsoring an Easter Egg hunt coming up this Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the park in Menlo. Children will have a chance to find 1,000 Easter eggs. Some of those eggs can be redeemed for prizes. Children through the fifth grade are welcome to attend the free event. A photographer will be on had as well as the Easter Bunny. The event will take place at 11 AM this coming Saturday.
A Georgia Prison warden was stabbed by an inmate on Wednesday of last week. The Georgia Department of Corrections has not released the name of the inmate who will be facing charges. Andrew McFarlane, the warden at Telfair State Prison, was not seriously injured according to a spokesperson with the Department of Corrections. He was treated and released at the prison’s medical facility. The Department of Corrections did not indicate how many times the warden was stabbed or if there were other prisoners involved in the disturbance at the close security prison.
South Georgia Milling and Paving has been awarded the bid for the first round of paving in Chattooga County for 2024. The paving is part of the Local Maintenance and Improvement Grants (LMIG) awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
