Georgia Tax Collections Decrease In February

The State of Georgia’s net tax collections in February totaled more than $2.03 billion, for a decrease of $92.3 million or 4.3 percent compared to FY 2023, when net tax collections totaled $2.12 billion for the month. Year-to-date, net tax revenue totaled roughly $21.15 billion, for an increase of $223.4 million or 1.1 percent over the same period in FY 2023, an increase that was driven principally by the collection of the state’s motor fuel excise tax, which was suspended during much of the first eight months of last year. Net of motor fuel tax changes, revenues for the eight months ended February 29 were down 3.1 percent from this time a year ago.

Cleanup At Macedonia Cemetery In Teloga

A cleanup day is planned at Macedonia Cemetery in the Teloga Community.  The event is set for Saturday, March 23 at 10 AM.  Those with loved ones buried at the cemetery are being asked to remove all faded flowers and holiday and seasonal items as well as any plastic or glass items.  All decorations will be removed on cleanup day.  Volunteers are needed for the cleanup effort.

Man Arrested At Traffic Stop After Domestic Incident

A thirty-seven-year-old Chattooga County man was arrested last week during a traffic stop after deputies received a complaint about a domestic incident on Memorial Drive.  According to a report released on Tuesday of this week, deputies received the complaint and stopped the suspect on Simmons Street.  While deputies detained the suspect at the traffic stop, a deputy went and spoke with the complainant in the domestic incident.  The complainant said that David Lawson Harrison, Jr. was drunk and began arguing with her.  At one point, he allegedly picked up a piece of yard furniture and hurled it at the complainant’s vehicle.  The deputy traveled back to the scene of the traffic stop and Harrison was placed under arrest.  Deputies say that Harrison was visibly intoxicated and had an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop.  He was charged with criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, driving without a license, DUI for alcohol, open container of alcohol and driving offenses and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Find a Girl Scouts set up at many local businesses, look for the red wagon sellers after school near the court house, or come by Wildflower Gift & Thrift in Trion to get cookies: after Saturday March 16 cookies are gone until next year. Presidential Preference Primary Today

Today is the Presidential Preference Primary in Georgia.  Voters will be voting in their local precincts.  No voting will take place at the Chattooga County Registrars Office.  If you don’t know where your precinct is located, you can go to the My Voter Page HERE. You can also find a sample ballot on the page.  You may also call the Chattooga County Registrars Office at 706-857-0739. Voters will be asked to choose a Democratic or Republican ballot.  The only office being voted on today is for President of the United States.  No other state, Federal or local races are on the ballot.  Voting will take place from 7 AM until 7 PM.  Be sure to bring a picture ID when you come to vote.

Summerville Main Street Downtown Historic Plaque Project

Georgia Humanities awards program grants to support public humanities efforts across the state that are creative in their approach to organizing and delivering the knowledge and understanding of the humanities to the general public. These grants bring together and strengthen communities through dialogue and shared experience. Recently, Summerville Main Street was awarded a $2,500.00 grant for the purpose of educating the community and visitors on the heritage and history within the downtown historic district. These funds were used to begin a Downtown Historic District Plaque project that tells the story of Downtown Summerville’s buildings history.

Rep. Greene Introduces Bill To Rename Federal Building In Rome To Honor The Late Judge Harold Murphy

Yesterday, U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene celebrated the passage of a bill that will rename the Federal Building in Rome in honor of the late Judge Harold Murphy.  Murphy, a native of Felton, Georgia, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  After his military service, he passed the bar and began practicing law.  He also served in the Georgia General Assembly.  Then-Governor Jimmy Carter appointed Murphy to a position on the Superior Court of the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit.  President Carter then appointed Murphy to the Federal bench, where he continued to serve until 2022.  You can read Congresswoman Greene’s remarks below:
