Goodwill of North Georgia recently received a $300,000 grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation to help serve women in non-traditional industries.
Congresswoman Marjory Taylor-Greene will not have any opposition in the Republican Primary in May. Greene, who moved to Rome to run for the 14th Congressional District Seat is a native of Milledgeville, Georgia and before moving to Rome, was a resident of Alpharetta. Greene will be facing a challenger in November, as four Democrats will be running in the May Primary Election. They include: Clarence Blalock, Shawn Harris, Deric Houston and Joseph Leigh. Blalock is a Paulding County resident and has a background in municipal government. Harris is a retired Brigadier General and lives in Rockmart. Deric Houston is a native of Florida and moved to Georgia after marrying his wife who is from Woodstock. Joseph Leigh is a native of Catoosa County and now lives in Walker County and works for his family’s architectural firm in Chattanooga.
Chattooga County voters will have only two contested races in this year’s Primary Elections that will be held in May. Four Republicans qualified to run for coroner and incumbent Democrat Earl Rainwater will not be seeking another term. The candidates who qualified were Savanna McGill, Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney, Heath Hammond and Carie Blackwell. Incumbent Republican Sole Commissioner Blake Elsberry will be facing off against Andy Allen. A candidate who had said that he would run against Sheriff Mark Schrader in the Republican Primary chose not to qualify. Two current school board members chose not to seek reelection. Democrat Eddie Elsberry and Republican B.J. Montgomery will be replaced by Chad Dodd and Derick Ekroat – the only two who qualified for the seats on the county school board. No Democrats qualified for any offices, meaning all elections will be decided in the May Republican Primary in Chattooga County.

Red Clay Ranch is a horse rescue and sanctuary located on Parker Road in Lyerly. The ranch takes in horses that are in need of rescue and care and operates year round feeding, nurturing and loving over 80 horses. The ranch is made up of 180 acres and includes three pastures that are designated for blind horses so that they can live independently and comfortably. Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods says that his office will be closed this Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Tuesday is the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary and the probates office will be closed the following day to take care of election responsibilities. The office will reopen on regular schedule on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
Advance Voting for the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary ended at 5 PM this past Friday. The Chattooga County Registrars Office says that 1,249 Chattooga County voters took advantage of advance voting to cast their ballots in the Primary, which will be held on Tuesday of this week. There were 76 absentee by mail ballots issued and 61 of those ballots have been returned. Those who requested absentee ballots have until 7 PM on Tuesday, March 12th to return the ballots to the Chattooga County Registrars Office. Voting will take place on Tuesday from 7 AM until 7 PM. On Tuesday, there will be no voting taking place at the Registrars Office. Instead, voters will need to go to their assigned voting precincts to cast their ballots. Voters will have to choose between a Democratic or Republican Presidential Preference ballot. Voters uncertain which polling place they are assigned to may visit the My Voter Page (sos.ga.gov/mvp) or contact the Registrars Office (706-857-0739). Remember, the Registrars Office will not have any more in person voting for this election.
A thirty-year-old Summerville man was arrested last week after causing his elderly grandmother to have a panic attack, requiring medical care. Summerville Police said that they were called to a domestic disturbance at the Saratoga Way Apartments. Police said that they were called to the apartment on Tuesday and warned the subject to stay away from his grandmother and not to be causing problems. Police were called back to the same apartment later that evening and arrested Dakoda Aran Lively. Police said that he was yelling at his grandmother, causing her to have a panic attack. Lively was charged with disorderly conduct and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The City of Summerville will hold its regular monthly council meeting for March coming up tomorrow evening at Summerville City Hall. The agenda released on Friday calls for a moment of silence in honor of former Summerville Firefighter and City Councilman David Ford who passed away last week. Funeral services for Mr. Ford are being held today at the Earl Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville. Also on the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting, the council is expected to approve Wednesday, July 3, 2024 as the date for Celebrate Independence in Summerville. The council is also expected to approve an event for the Community Resource Center’s Fighting Hunger Feeding Hope 5K event that will be held later this month. The council will also be asked to approve City Manager Andrea Surratt as the 2024 voting delegate for the Georgia Municipal Gas Authority. The meeting will be preceded by a question and answer session with the mayor and city council members at 4:30 PM. The meeting gets underway at 5 PM and the public is invited to attend.
