The Securities Division of Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office has teamed with Funding The Future, a nonprofit organization dedicated to instilling financial literacy in schools. A downtown Summerville church is inviting the public to a Chili Cook-Off next weekend.  Summerville First United Methodist Church will be hosting the event on Saturday, March 16th at 4 PM,  and is telling chili makers to “bring on the heat”.  The event is free to register and guests can get all the chili they want to eat for just $10 per person.  In addition, cornbread and toppings for the chili will be available – along with a dessert and drink.  All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the roof fund and other ministries of Summerville First United Methodist Church.  The event is open to all and everyone is invited to attend.

David Ford, a longtime Summerville City Councilman and firefighter with the city, passed away earlier this week.  Mr. Ford had served on the Summerville City Council for over twelve years and had retired from service with the Summerville Fire Department after thirty-two years.  Ford was also a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the United States Marine Corps.  Funeral services for Mr. Ford will be held tomorrow at the J.D. Hill Chapel of the Earl Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville.  Public visitation will be held from 5 PM until 7 PM at the funeral home.

A Northwest Georgia woman incarcerated at Georgia’s largest women’s prison has filed a federal lawsuit alleging she was sexually assaulted by a correctional officer and had to undergo surgery after the attack.

For the 13th consecutive year, a Georgia Tech study shows an increase in revenue generated by Georgia’s forest industry. According to a new report by the Enterprise Innovation Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the total economic output of the forest industry rose to $42 billion in 2022, a 1.6% increase from the previous year. Total direct revenue generated by the forest industry rose 1.5% from 2021 to $25 billion in 2022. The annual report also shows forestry provided the state with $807 million in tax revenue for 2022.

A Summerville man was arrested on March 4th after he was reported to be at a convenience store that had trespassed him from the property in the past.  Summerville Police responded to the Circle K on the Lyerly Highway after store employees reported that thirty-one-year-old Jerry Michael Luallen had been in the store.  Luallen had been banned from the store earlier due to “erratic behavior”, according to police.  When officers arrived at the store, Luallen had left, but they quickly apprehended him nearby on Highway 114.  Luallen was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
