Chattooga County Deputies responded to a call about an abandoned truck being left in a field on Pennington Drive, near the Chattooga River, in Summerville on Wednesday of last week.  Deputies met with the owner of the property who said that the truck had damaged the field and that the field would have to be plowed up to repair the damage.  Inside the vehicle, deputies found multiple traffic citations that were issued to seventeen-year-old Jordan Grady Roan.  Deputies traveled to Roan’s residence and asked him about the abandoned truck.  The teen told the deputies that he knew the owner and had permission to “go riding” in the field.  He told the deputies that a tire had gone flat, so he left the truck in the field. But when deputies pressed Roan about who owned the property, he told them he would have to call a friend to find out who owned the property.  Roan was placed under arrest and charged with criminal trespass and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Earlier this week, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader posted a warning on social media about scammers who are calling Chattooga County residents with warrants and offering to settle those warrants over the phone.  The sheriff said, “Please know that we will never, ever offer for you to settle a warrant over the phone for payment”.  The sheriff said that the scammers had “spoofed” the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office phone number to where it would show on the caller ID for unsuspecting victims.   The scammers even go so far as using the actual names of officers that work for the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.  The sheriff urges the public not to fall for these kinds of scams.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) students excelled at the 2024 SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference, Feb. 22-24, in Atlanta. GNTC competed in 21 categories and took home eight gold medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals.  A GNTC student from Chattooga County was one of the Gold medal winners.

A thirty-eight-year-old Chattooga County man was arrested last week after a traffic stop in which he admitted to a deputy that he had smoked “an entire blunt” before driving.  A deputy was sitting stationary at the Old Holland Store on Highway 100 when he observed a vehicle drive by and the driver had no seat belt on.  After performing a traffic stop, and smelling burnt marijuana in the vehicle, the deputy asked the driver if he had been smoking marijuana.  After a field sobriety test, thirty-eight-year-old Dustin Dewayne Earl Hines was charged with DUI for drugs and traffic offenses and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

The Georgia Senate approved a plan on Tuesday that would allow Georgians to decide at the ballot box in November whether legalized sports betting should be allowed in the state.

At the end of the day yesterday, 511 Chattooga County voters had cast their ballot early in the 2012 Presidential Preference Primary, that according to the Chattooga County Registrars Office. There have been 56 absentee ballots issued and 19 have been returned.  Early voting continues for the Primary which will be held on March 12.  Voters will be able to cast a ballot this Saturday, March 12, 2024.

Summerville Police responded to a call on Cedar Street over the past weekend and discovered a man who had been hit multiple times in the face.  The victim told officers that he had problems with a woman and had went to confront her, but when he arrived several men came out and attacked him.  The victim was bleeding from the mouth when the officers and EMT workers arrived on the scene.  The victim would not identify any of the aggressors to police, telling them that he was not sure who the attackers were.  The victim was taken to the Chattooga County Emergency Department via AtriumHealth Floyd Ambulance.  Officers told the victim that he could come up with some names for the men who had beat him, to let them know.

Summerville Police were called to the Summerville Post Office last Friday after workers at the post office discovered that someone had passed a fake $20 bill.  The postal workers said that they were going to contact the person to let them know that the money that they had used was fake.  No charges were filed, but the responding officer did take possession of the counterfeit money.
